Brother PJ-800 printers provide the ultimate pint-sized A4 printer for field workers, service, contracts, and more

By David M Williams

Brother has a new range of super-compact mobile A4 thermal printers - the PJ 800 series, which will help you print anywhere, anytime, from any device.

The new Brother range of mobile A4 thermal printers came out late last year, and iTWire has been trying one out. They are the PJ-800 series which builds on Brother’s previous PJ-700 series, enhancing the connectivity options, print speed, and output quality.

They are perfect for those who work in field sales and service, delivery and logistics, emergency services, and really, anybody who needs to ensure they can print whenever and wherever they must. That’s legal documents, receipts, and all kinds of things.

The new PJ-800 range includes the PJ-822, PJ-832, PJ-862, PJ-863, and PJ-883. The PJ-823, PJ-863, and PJ-883 offer 300 DPI while the PJ-822 and PJ-862 offer 203 DPI output. The higher-end PJ-833 offers dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC also.

All models support charging and data transfer via USB-C, and a variety of printer command languages including ZPL2. They offer USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, and speed up to 13.5 pages per minute, depending on connection type and battery capacity. Brother also provides free customer support for the product’s lifetime.

iTWire has been trying out the PJ-863 for ourselves, and the first impression is how remarkably small it is. This is a printer that literally is barely larger than a laptop battery. It’s smaller than a toner cartridge for a laser printer. The printer also helpfully let us know what “PJ” stands for; that’s “pocket jet” and sure enough, this teeny tiny printer is a pocket rocket. Check it out in my photo here; I've added scissors and an apple for comparison.

I've found it to be super portable beyond all expectations. In fact, it’s 480g excluding battery but yet can print full-sized A4 documents.

In years past a portable printer was still a sizeable unit that you’d need to carry in a box. The Brother PJ-800 series is so small and light you can easily store it in your laptop bag. I could take the printer to meetings and not worry about how to connect to their network or how to find a printer or install random drivers - instead, I simply pulled out the PJ-863 and plonked it on my desk. Similarly, I could print urgent documents on the side of the road in my car, at an airport, and anywhere else. What’s really nice too is that it uses thermal technology so there’s no messy ink or toner to worry about. There’s no getting your fingers dirty or having it leak inside your bag.

Brother International Australia mobile print and labelling specialist David Molloy said, “while developing the new PJ-800 series, our priority was to offer improved specifications while maintaining everything that was great about its predecessor. That’s exactly what we have achieved here – the design is still extremely compact, which is unique for a full-page print solution, and our existing customers can upgrade their printer while keeping their existing accessories.”

“Our main objective is to enable the mobile workforce to get on with the job at hand, whether they are emergency service workers, field service engineers or mobile sales teams. They can do this without the added burden of follow-up administrative tasks or errors relating to handwritten documentation. The PJ-800 series is a true mobile solution as no ink is required, meaning no refills or spillages whilst on the move.”

With the PJ 800 series range, Brother has made a tremendously easy, simple, effective, and versatile suite of super-portable printers. They’re fast, with up to 13.5 pages per minute and 300 DPI output. You can print on paper of different sizes and thicknesses up to 75gsm. You can connect via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-C, and NFC. You can print from different operating systems and devices.

Some people love to print - I’ve known companies where the admin team would print every email they received and store them in a binder, even spam emails. I’m way on the other end of the print spectrum - I’ll avoid printing whenever I can, but the reality is we still need to print. It might be instructions or it might be funny memes for the office wall. However, it might also be important contracts, courier consignment labels, statements and other legal documents. It could even be the chore list for your children or their homework. Whatever the need, if you have to print, you have to print - and with the Brother PJ 800 series, you can print anywhere, anytime.

It's not only suitable for individuals, but it’s business-ready with a raft of optional accessories such as USB-C adapters, long-lasting Li-ion batteries, protective cases, and more, and is backwards compatible with the PJ-700 series if you’re upgrading.

iTWire found it an impressive device and you can get your hands on it through Brother’s B2B channels.
