As a UX director, I’ve reviewed countless design portfolios over the years, and one thing that often stands out is the lack of attention given to the “About me” page. Many junior designers tend to overlook this section or simply include a brief bio without much thought. However, I believe that the “About me” page is one of the most important sections of any design portfolio. Unless you are applying for a contractor or freelancing role, a cultural and team fit is often essential for hiring managers. Skills can be learned. Instead, personalities are rooted deep within the individuals. Make sure to surface your personality through your About page.

In this article, I will share tips and tricks to help you turn your “About me” page into a powerful tool that can help you stand out and land your dream job.

1. Start with a clear and concise headline

Your “About me” page should have a clear and concise headline that tells the reader who you are and what you do. Avoid generic titles like “About” or “Bio” and instead use a headline that highlights your unique skills and experience. For example, “Award-winning UI/UX Designer with 5+ years of experience” or “Passionate Graphic Designer specializing in branding and typography”.

2. Tell a story. Be authentic.

Instead of simply listing your accomplishments, use your About page to tell a story about yourself. Share your journey as a designer, how you got started, and what drives you. Don’t be afraid to show some personality and inject some humour into your writing. This will help you connect with the reader and make a lasting impression.

3. Highlight your Unique Selling Proposition

What sets you apart from other designers? Identify your unique selling proposition (USP) and highlight it on your “About me” page. This could be your design philosophy, a particular skill or expertise, or your experience working with a specific industry. Make sure that your USP is prominent and easy to understand.
