Phone scams alert kicks of Privacy Awareness Week Featured

By Gordon Peters

A timely warning about the dangers of being hit by phone scammers seeking out personal details for potential financial gain has been issued for the start of Privacy Awareness Week.

The telecommunications industry regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), issued an alert that this week, with the Office of the Information Commissioner (OAIC), it is encouraging Australians to get back to basics to protect their personal information.

“As phone scammers continue to target Australians to obtain our personal details, it’s critical we take steps to protect our information,” warns the ACMA, adding that “building strong privacy habits will help you, your family and friends avoid phone scams”.

“Scams target everyone. Scammers use stealth, surprise and clever tactics to get what they want, which may be your money or your personal details. No-one is too smart to be scammed. But, there are things you can do to help spot—and stop—a phone scam. If you think you’ve been scammed, tell your bank and phone company immediately.”

The ACMA issues a list of tips to protect yourself if confronted by phone scammers including:
Don’t share personal information without good reason, and only share what’s necessary.
Don’t reply or click on any links in text messages.
Don’t answer if you don’t know who’s calling. Let the call go to voicemail. If the caller leaves a number, check it matches the one on their website.

To find out more on how to spot and stop phone scams go to the ACMA website and check out the OAIC’s top 10 tips for privacy habits.
