An anonymous reader shares a report: A young Harrison Ford will grace cinema screens for 25 minutes this summer -- aided by some new Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) software. The news that LucasFilm's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would feature a de-aged Ford came at the end of last year, but an interview with director James Mangold in Total Film just revealed it will be for almost a fifth of the film's running time.

The fifth Indiana Jones iteration starts with an opening scene from 1944 -- about eight years after Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark took place. "My hope is that, although it will be talked about in terms of technology, you just watch it and go, 'Oh my God, they just found footage. This was a thing they shot 40 years ago," Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm and a producer, told Empire. The rest of the movie shoots forward to 1969, with Indy on a mission to prevent a comeback of Nazism.
  • Mark Hamill does a spot-on imitation of Harrison. At some point they could just use an AI Indiana Jones with Mark's audio dub. Could it be any worse than some of the things they've done with Star Wars actors that passed away?
    • Re:

Just AI it all the way down.

    • Re:

We have reached a point where AI can mimic voices and replace actor's faces, and now all it needs is to get faster and cheaper. We could bring back some tragically cancelled stuff like Firefly, or fix botched endings like Game of Thrones.

Then again, having seen a de-aged Mark Hamill in The Mandalorian and the awful Book of Boba Fett, maybe it's not quite ready yet.

Firefly season 3: They discover that the chemical that creates Reavers can also raise the dead. Wash comes back as a super-intelligent Reaver and begins stalking Serenity. A mind-altering drug accidentally released on the ship while trying to find a cure results in Kaylee ending up pregnant with Mal's child, creating a bizarre love triangle with Inara and a bitter rivalry that threatens to tear the ship apart from the inside.

        Or maybe not.:-D

    • Re:

Nice Funny start to the conversation, though I was hoping for a joke about screen immortality in the discussion. Or maybe some jokes about fan fiction or fan-created movies. (No other mentions of the first angle and only one tangential touch on the second.)

    • Re:

Doomcock's videos about it paint a horrible picture of woke incompetence from the top.

      • Re:

If he's even half right, it was re-shot (again) at least in part because of the leaks/RUMORS he reported.

    • Re:

Yeah...the YouTubers reporting leaks from Disney and Kathleens crew don't sound good with regard to Indy.

I hear there have been TONS of reshoots....and the original story was going to be the lady in this movie (Played Fleabag on some streaming service show?)....at the end would go through time travel and basically erase Indy and take his place?

Sounded like the ultimate re-write tome thing and get rid of any masculine heroes of the past....much like they did with Star Wars.

At least, that's what the rumors

They already messed up the franchise by introducing aliens in the belated fourth installment when the entire premise of the fantastic elements in the franchise resolved around the mythical. I'm not sure I'm even going to bother to watch this movie to be honest, or if I do, it may be waiting until it's included at no additional cost on the streaming service I use.

        • Re:

You've forgotten Raiders of the Lost Ark having extreme (radiation) burning by holy light and melting by spring-water from a cursed cup. Temple of Doom wasn't much different.

        • Re:

IJ 1 and 3 had Mcguffins that many people believe were real historical objects in Judeo-Christian lore. Whether they were real objects in real life doesn't matter. IJ 2 and 4 made up Mcguffin objects that no one cared about in real life and those episodes failed miserably. If IJ 5 is another made up Mcguffin object it will also fail. There's plenty of historical objects that could be real to draw from--Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, The Tree of Life, The Tower of Babel, Noah's Ark, the Centurian's

how about Thors hammer or spear of Lugh etc ?
          • Re:

the Sankara Stones weren't made up, they just came from different fairy tales than you grew up with. The aliens were bunk though.

            • Re:

Apparently the Sankara Stones were made up. The real stones are known as Shiva lingams and are all over and have little resemblance to the stones in the movie. The movie was banned in India when it came out due to offensive cultural errors like human sacrifice.

Oh no an icky woman in my movies!

        • Oh no an icky woman in my movies!

I have nothing against women in movies...why should I?

They've always been there in the past...

It's just that it seems that rather than come up with new, unique women heroes in moves today...they would rather tear down the male heroes of the past, or gender/race swap them for some unknown reason.

Why not come up with NEW characters and movies with "under represented" races and genders and start fresh franchises?

You don't have to destroy the past that so many of us enjoyed and could still be enjoyed today.

          Sheesh...

          • I 'can't wait' until they go so far with Woke that they inadverently turn a real life historical villian into some kind of politically correct hero.

Maybe not enough to do this to someone like Hitler or Christopher Columbus, but enough that people will take notice and there will be an uproar.

        • Re:

You are being disingenuous and you know it. Nobody ever had a problem with women in their movies, being heroines, having power, etc. The issue is the removal famous and loved male heroes from their own franchises only to replace them with women. It's rude to the fans! So they don't like it, and there is absolutely no good reason why they should.

Such behavior does not advance any cause of gender equality, it just embitters people against it. This fact should be outright obvious to everyone involved, whi

    • Re:

Every rumor I've seen reported indicate $350M minimum has been spent on the production. When you factor in ads, "studio overhead", theater %, this thing has to hit $800-900 Million just to break even.

    • If you saw The Irishman where they 'de-aged' Robert De Niro, it wasn't the visual effect that makes this a bad idea. The problem is that many people, not just actors, no longer move like younger people. Right at the beginning of 'Irishman' De Niro's character charges out to the corner store to beat up the store owner who wronged his daughter. While the shopkeeper is on the ground De Niro was 'kicking' him. Except it was completely unconvincing since he doesn't have the movement and athleticism that the younger man would have had. It looked wrong. The movement of an old many with the face of a young man. It doesn't work.

It is a movie and if you turn off the viewer with stuff like that, it will be noticed. I personally believe it is one of the things that took away from 'The Irishman' and why it received poor reviews.

      • Re:

AI can fix that I'm sure. Based on what I'm seeing people post on sites like reddit and twitter, at some point in the near future we may not even need the actor.. the movie's director/screenwriter can amateurishly act out the various parts of the movie and the AI can change them into the various characters and even change the expressiveness/mood to match the screenwriters intent.

      • Re:

In other words, they replace the actor with a younger stand in, replace the face in post production and pay a licence fee to the actual actor (or the estate of the actor if the actor has passed away).

Probably cheaper then paying the actual actor to spend time on set acting, and the actor can find alot of work, "licenced acting" in multiple movies daily if really greedy. And probably getting the audience bored of that actor in a very short while.

      • The "Uncanny Valley" at work. They could've corrected his movements during post production but at that point they might as well used a CGI character or a younger look-a-like.

  • The Dial of Destiny? The Dial of Destiny.

This sounds like something Ryan Reynolds would use in lead-up posters to the next Deadpool just to fourth-wall during the title sequence of the actual film and change it while mocking whoever came up with it. It's not just surface level terrible. It's "the marketing department thought they were the creative department" level bad.

It's "The Light Switch of Fate" bad. It's "The Table Tennis Paddle of Judiciary Power" bad. It's "The Toggle Switch of Super-Science" bad. It's "The Nick Cage of Power Dumps" bad.

I'm at a loss as to how that could even get to the public.

    • "The Dial of Destiny" is decidedly deplorable.

      • Re:

If it turned out to be a Stargate cross over where it turns out to be the lost dial device for their original gate, I would be totally fine with that.
        • Re:

You're assuming they're familiar with prior works that were extremely popular. I doubt they've even glanced at the previous material. Time travel is one massive hack to say we're trading consistency for a quick buck. The writers, wrote themselves into a corner and pull out the old it was a dream, it was time travel. I'm not investing in anything with time travel as all signs lead to "nothing matters" and "more hacks to come".
    • Re:

It's fine. I just watched the trailer. It's fine. It'll be fine.

      • Re:

I like how you're repeating it like a victim after a car-crash that's in too much shock to even realize they're in shock.

I'm assuming its a 90 year old Indy trying to figure out how to dial a cell phone.

I thought it was "Dial D for Destiny"

    • Re:

      1. "The Light Switch of Fate" made me snort-laugh.
      2. When I first heard "Dial of Destiny", I thought of the movie "Pick of Destiny", a title chosen for its ridiculous sound.

At this point, the group of people responsible for making sequels to continue well-loved franchises would be indistinguishable from a group of people responsible for destroying them.

      • Re:

At this point? It's parodies masquerading as sequels.

As long as Kennedy is attached to ILM, the results will be horrible. Everything she's touched has sullied the story and universe of the properties involved. If she's talking about it that way, you can be almost certain the film is going to be horrible.

"The Dial of Destiny"? Horrible. I can't help thinking of the scene from Back to the Future (1, I think) where the young George says "You are my density." Could they not have come up with some other actual archaic thing?

If it's about the Antikythera mechanism... god help us.

    • You need to keep up with the latest in archaeology.

The Antikythera device was recently determined to be the first AI and was used to generate crypto.

You should buy up Destiny Dial Coins (ddc) while they're still cheap!

      • Re:

Yeah, but they were wickedly expensive. And they used up all the good display devices and everyone else had to be content with sundials.

    • Re:

I was so shocked by how horrible the subtitle was I didn't even think about what it could mean. The horror. The horror.

      • Re:

"Dial of Destiny", you mean it goes to 11 [youtube.com]?
      • Re:

"Spear of Destiny" would have been far more interesting, I suspect.

    • Re:

She was involved in the original Indiana Jones movies.

      • Re:

She was a glorified accountant, never part of the creative team.

    • Re:

I just watched the trailer. It's fine. It looks OK. Probably some time travel or some crap, but it looks like a decent flick.

    • Indiana Jones is a take on the pulp fiction paperbacks of yesterday. I don’t think the movie will be good but come on, are you forgetting the rest of the titles?

      Raiders Of The Lost Ark
      Temple Of Doom
      Last Crusade
      Crystal Skull
      Dial Of Destiny

I mean it’s not exactly out of place.

  • I'm not sure how good the technology is, but can they de-age him to like two or three years before he was born?

    • Re:

It would be more fun if we called it youthenized.

      Ok....you did it.

You win the internet today with that one..haha.

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to steal that one from you if you don't mind...

    • Re:

Putin found a foe worthy of his skills - people who haven't existed in 75 years!

      • Re:

According to Putin, the true Nazis are Jewish.
          • Re:

If Putin actually cared about getting rid of Nazis, he would focus on getting rid of the ones in the Russian army.
        • Re:

In Russian propaganda "Nazi" does not mean what it means to everyone else, instead it's a catch-all term used to describe enemies of Russia in general, In the USSR "capitalists" and "fascists" were the enemies plotting against them. Today those enemies are called Nazis instead.

Jews or the Holocaust doesn't factor into whether someone is a Nazi at all as far as the Kreml is concerned - keep in mind that this is used as a propaganda term.

  • the movie shoots forward to 1969, with Indy on a mission to prevent a comeback of Nazism.

It should have gone to 2023 we need this much more in the here and now.

        • Re:

I like the way you are thinking and your quick reflexes. There's hope yet that we will get through this without Indy.

      • Yep, they are known for wanting human rights for all and never spout anything hateful except against big government.

What parallel universe do you come from because it sounds like a rather nice place to live compared to this universe.

      • Re:

Back then it was about Jews, Gays and Trans in that order, now the order is Trans, Gays and then the Jews.

Yet, the Nazi stench remains the same.

      • Re:

I agree that both baptism and circumcision of infants are morally wrong because the child cannot understand nor consent to either.

Wait, that's not what you're talking about?

Are you talking about the routine, non-consensual genital surgery performed on children who are born intersex? That is pretty iffy too.

Wait, you're not talking about that either?

Oh. You're talking about Hillary Clinton turning frogs gay with a Jewish space laser in the basement of a pizza parlor. Got it.

          • Re:

Since red states are banning this medical procedure they prepare for an influx from these states. Same as with abortions.

Do you have a point to make?

  • Also just praying that Ke Huy Quan will reprise his role. 3

  • Actually, they de-aged Harrison for the entire movie - they just made him look young for the first 25 minutes.

Seriously, if they didn't, no one would recognize him.

  • Any news on whether they'll pretend the 4th one never happened?

The one thing they can do to maybe - maybe - breath life into the franchise again is to undo that one. I have no hopes about that, but it'd be an absolute necessity.

  • I really don't give a crap about amazing special effects for aging on something like Indiana Jones, just get good writers that aren't writing to some woke or agenda of the moment bias to try to push some shit down our throats, Movies are for enjoyment and escapism, especially Indiana Jones. Raiders was the first movie I ever saw at the cinema so I have fond memories of it that even the Crystal skull couldn't completely obliterate.
  • Why don't make it the whole time?

They can argue that Indiana drank from the Holy Grail too back in the "last crusade".

Also, they missed the opportunity to deep-fake Sean Connery, too!

Come on!, the plot isn't finished yet.

Also, it would be nice if randomly and without reasons Alison Doody and Kate Capshaw appear dancing... I mean, the de-aged ones of course!
  • Seriously, with all of the whacked out bizarro shit in the first 3 movies, this one was much more in the realm of reality.

Oh well, can't wait for the next internet meme to be born out of this one.

  • The first Indiana Jones was fun. After that, just garbage repackaged. Just replace Harrison Ford with an AI-generated guy.
