Tesla has begun producing in Shanghai a version of the Model Y to be sold in Canada this year, the first time it will ship cars to North America from China, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter and a production memo.

The Shanghai Gigafactory began production of the Canada-bound version of Model Y earlier this month, sources told Reuters. Meanwhile, the vehicles have been designed and tested for export to North America, with the goal of producing nearly 9,000 this quarter, according to a memo seen by the news outlet.

Over the weekend, Tesla posted on its website that it will offer a new, cheaper version of the Model Y in Canada, saying customers can expect to receive it between May and July.

Tesla’s Shanghai plant uses lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries for the Model Y version produced there for sale in China and for export to Europe and other markets.

In terms of range per charge, this particular version stands at 245 miles (394 km), while the U.S. version of the entry-level Model Y is capable of reaching 279 miles, according to Tesla's website.

Shanghai is the most important and cost-effective manufacturing hub for Tesla because of its rich pool of skilled workers and established industry automotive supply chain. Last year, the US automaker has shipped more than 271,000 Model Y and Model 3 cars from its Shanghai plant to Europe and other markets, accounting for roughly one-fifth of its global sales.
