After years of litigation over the Cambridge Analytical Scandal, things look to be settling down now. Users of Facebook who claimed that their personal data was leaked are set to get cash settlements. A federal judge has ordered Meta to share an amount of $725 million to users whose information were shared without their consent. This settlement is available to all users who used Facebook between May 2007 and December 2022 in the U.S. Settlements will begin in some few months’ time, but you don’t need to wait that long to submit your claim. You can submit your claim as soon as possible in order not to miss the time.

To start the process, you need to visit the Facebook settlement website and click on “submit claim” button which you can locate at the top of the page. You will come across a couple of instructions on the page but in all, you will fill out a form. You need to prepare some personal information such as email, phone number or username associated with your Facebook account. If you have more than one account, don’t file for all of them. We advise you file for the most active and oldest account.

Next, you will complete an eligibility test. This may involve checking whether you lived in the US between May 2007 and December 2022. They will also check whether you were a Facebook user within this period. Lastly, you will sign the form and indicate your payment method. You can choose to accept payment with your bank account. However, if you don’t feel safe giving out your banking details, you can accept payment with either PayPal or Venmo.

All users have till August 25, 2023, at 11:59PM PT to submit their claims. You can also submit your claim by mail. However, you have to make sure that the mail is postmarked before or on 25th of August 2023. Make sure that all the information you provided are accurate and note that you cannot submit two claims.

If you do not understand something or have any questions regarding the claim, you can send the settlement team an email via [email protected] or call 1-855-566-2233. Also, the claim form recommends all users to add “[email protected]” to their email contacts. This is to ensure that any important email does not end up in the spam folder.

There is no specified amount for each person to receive. The court ordered Meta to share $725 million to all users. Therefore, Meta will only share this amount to users who submit their claims. Simply put, the amount a user can receive will depend on the number of users who submit their claims. It will also depend on how long the user used Facebook during the stated time period.

The final hearing of the case is set to September 7 where the court will rule its final approval. In case of any appeals, September 7th will be the final date for that. After the final judgement, Meta will begin sending out payment to all eligible users.
