Tesla’s Chinese rivals unveil their latest electric vehicles at Shanghai Auto Show

Tesla’s Chinese rivals attracted audiences and stole the limelight on the first two days of Shanghai Auto Show with their latest electric vehicles (EVs).

China’s largest electric vehicle maker BYD unveiled its much-awaited Seagull, surprising attendees not so much with its appearance or features as with the fact that it would sell for as little as 78,000 yuan ($11,300), which is less than half the cost of the least expensive new energy cars available elsewhere.

The affordable mini city car enables fast charging and takes 30 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%. It utilizes cutting-edge "Blade" batteries that are built using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology.

The Seagull is smaller than BYD's current smallest car, the Dolphin.

A Song L prototype, an all-electric SUV, was also unveiled by BYD. The Destroyer 07 hybrid sedan is also anticipated to be unveiled during the car show.

The U9 electric supercar will be unveiled at the Shanghai event by the new, premium Yangwang brand of the Chinese EV behemoth.

The Yangwang U9 is expected to cost around RMB 1 million($145,400). According to BYD, the automobile can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 3 seconds.

At the Shanghai expo on Tuesday, Yangwang—whose name means "looking up"—started selling its U8 off-road SUV. The U8 will price at RMB 1,098,000($160,000).

The N7, a sporty, mid-size SUV, might be displayed by Denza, a new, premium brand that is a collaboration between BYD and Daimler, the largest automaker in Germany.

the Denza N7 is scheduled for release in the first half of 2023.

At Xpeng’s booth, the Guangzhou-based carmaker launched the G6, a midsize sport-utility vehicle, which will price between 200,000 and 300,000 yuan. The vehicle will come with Xpeng’s intelligent assisted driving software. The G6 aims to take on Tesla’s Model Y.

Brian Gu, the president and vice chairman of Xpeng, said his company planned to reduce the cost of building a powertrain by 25 percent by the end of the year. Powertrains, particularly the batteries, make up about two-fifths of Xpeng’s overall cost of building an electric car.

Nio unveiled an revamped ES6 SUV, one of its most popular EVs, as well as an updated ET7 sedan on Tuesday at Shanghai Auto Show.

According to local media sources, the new Nio ET7 "brings more than 15 updates and upgrades," including upgraded seats and a wireless charging panel for mobile devices. The new ET7 starts at RMB 458,000 ($66,600), including the battery. Mid-May is the start of delivery.

Nio's co-founder and CEO, William Li, stated that he does not see the firm as a direct competitor to Tesla because Nio's vehicles are more expensive than Tesla's, demonstrating that they are superior to the Model 3 and Model Y in terms of design, technology, and performance.

High-end EV startup Polestar (PSNY) from Sweden unveiled the Polestar 4 high-performance SUV on Tuesday.

It is regarded as a Model Y competitor. However, according to CnEVPost, it is far more expensive than the Model Y, with a starting price range of RMB 349,800 ($50,870) to RMB 533,800. The Model Y, with a starting price of RMB 261,900, is the most popular electric SUV in China.

The Polestar 3, which debuted in China last month and has a starting price of RMB 698,000 ($101,000), will also be displayed by Polestar at the car show.

Co-owners of the high-end EV startup are Volvo of Sweden and Geely of China.
