Netflix password-sharing crackdown, ad tier update: Key takeaways from the streamer's earnings call
Netflix's (NFLX) first quarter earnings results were mixed, with the streamer slightly missing analysts' revenue projections ($8.16 billion versus $8.18 billion expected). The stock moved fairly dramatically in after-hours trading, ultimately nearing the flatline by the time the call wrapped up. Yahoo Finance's Brad Smith and Seana Smith were listening to the Netflix earnings call. Among their key takeaways: Netflix leadership was "very excited" about a lot of things, but pretty vague on the details. On some of the bigger issues analysts have been eyeing, the company shed more light on their password-sharing crackdown, but did not share much about what lies ahead for its ad tier plans. Video Transcript
BRAD SMITH: We just got off of Netflix earnings call. And Seana, the stock has been on a roller coaster since reporting its mixed first quarter results. I want to go straight to the YFI Interactive and just take a look at this after-hours move. I've got all of the streaming names pulled up here for our viewers. And this after-hours move that they're seeing below what was today's move. And I'm going to zero in on Netflix here and pull that out. As of right now, down by about 6/10 of a percent or half a percent after-hours. In the extended session, we've been seeing this move around. And even now as I'm loading up this chart, it's moving around. Still down though by about 1/10 of a percent.
But here's what that coaster activity was that I was describing. After the close, this has moved lower by as much as 8%, only to then retrace some of those losses and get into positive territory, up roughly 2%. And so even as the call was going on, you saw that movement start to fluctuate, move back towards kind of the flat line towards where it closed on the day and ultimately netted out at the end of the call with the Netflix executives down a fraction of a percent.

Chinese EV makers should brace for protectionist policies abroad - Nio CEO
Chinese electric vehicle makers should brace for the possibility of protectionist policies being leveled against them by foreign governments as they seize on their cost advantages to expand exports, the founder of Chinese EV maker Nio said. William Li told reporters on the sidelines of the Shanghai Autoshow that he estimated his firm and peers making EVs in China had as much as a 20% cost advantage over rivals such as Tesla thanks to China's grip over the supply chain and raw materials. Nio and Chinese rivals such as Xpeng and BYD have set their sights on winning more customers abroad, especially in Europe, as demand weakens in China.
