Elon Musk has said that he will "hopefully do more good than harm" by creating a new artificial intelligence that seeks to understand the universe.
The billionaire tycoon announced that he intends to create a programme not bound by political correctness that he intends to call TruthGPT, as an alternative to the ChatGPT software that has proved an internet sensation this year.
The Tesla billionaire and Twitter owner told Fox News that Google and OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed company behind ChatGPT, were training their systems to lie and be politically correct.
While acknowledging that AI "has the potential of civilisational destruction," Mr Musk said that his version will be safer because it will be a “maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe”.
Speaking to Fox News, he said: “I think that this might be the best path to safety in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.
"It's simply starting late. But I will try to create a third option... And that third option, hopefully, does more good than harm."
Mr Musk set up a company called X.AI in Nevada last month and has been hiring researchers away from OpenAI and Google.
He helped found OpenAI as a non-profit almost a decade ago after a dispute with Google founder Larry Page.
Mr Musk said that Mr Page had wanted to create a “digital super intelligence, basically a digital God”, and called Mr Musk a “speciesist” for suggesting that AI should serve the interests of humans.
OpenAI has since altered its business model to allow it to make a profit for investors, and struck a multi-billion dollar deal with Microsoft to provide technology for its Bing chatbot. Mr Musk said the company was now “closely allied with Microsoft”.
Last month he was among a group of experts who called for a six-month moratorium on AI research, warning that the technology was getting out of control.
Speaking about his $44bn (£35bn) Twitter acquisition last year, Mr Musk told Fox that the deal does not currently appear “financially smart”, saying “I bought it for twice as much as it should have been bought for”.
He said government agencies including the US had widespread access to Twitter data including direct messages, a fact that had shocked him on acquiring the company.
He said: “The degree to which various government agencies effectively had full access to everything that was going on on Twitter blew my mind. I was not aware of that."
He said Twitter planned to start encrypting messages as soon as this month.
