Pop icon Jay Chou sues NetEase for infringement

Chinese music artist Jay Chou is suing NetEase for rights infringement, allegedly in connection with an event last summer that promoted one of the online games offered by the internet giant.

According to a recent notice posted on the official website of the People's Court of Hangzhou Binjiang district, where NetEase is headquartered, the Taiwanese musician and his music production firm JVR Music are suing three NetEase affiliates for "unfair competition". On April 17, the case will be heard.

According to media outlet Chnfund.Com, the issue is thought to be related to a promotional event held last July for Tianxia 3, a multiplayer online game created by NetEase. According to the report, Chou's digital records and performance tickets were given out as part of the promotion without NetEase's consent.

The Taipei-based company claimed the advertising misled players into thinking the online game had a "specific connection" to Jay Chou and JVR Music.

The three defendants are Leihuo, NetEase's in-house gaming studio, and its two affiliates in Hangzhou and Guangzhou. Leihuo is the owner of a number of well-known games, including Naraka: Bladepoint.

Conflict between Chou and NetEase has existed in the past as well. Chou's music is no longer accessible on NetEase Cloud Music, the company's music streaming service, as a result of a prior copyright dispute. Tencent Music, a significant rival of NetEase Cloud Music, counts Chou as a longtime partner.
