'Something has now broken' amid Fed rate hikes: Strategist
Pressure is growing on the Federal Reserve ahead of next month's policy decision. Continued volatility in the banking sector, higher oil prices, and the possibility of more rate hikes is creating uncertainty on Wall Street. One strategist says that the collapse of Silicon Valley and Signature banks are ultimately going to derail Fed's rate hike plans. "[The Fed] essentially told the markets that they were going to raise rates and shrink the size of their balance sheet until something broke. Well guess what? Something has now broken, as we've seen in the banking system," says Hennion & Walsh CIO Kevin Mahn. Mahn also believes the continuous rate hikes will weigh on upcoming earnings, pointing to a recent FactSet analysis that predicts an earnings decline of 6.6% for the S&P 500. However, the strategist doesn't see the entire situation as a negative. "If there's a silver lining to all of this, it's going to prevent the Fed, in my opinion, from being as aggressive as they wanted to be to help combat inflation." Watch Seana Smith's entire interview with Kevin Mahn here. KEY VIDEO MOMENTS: 0:14 Mahn on the Fed raising rates until something broke 1:35 Mahn on why he believes there will only be one more rate hike in 2023

KEVIN MAHN: My outlook for this year was better days ahead for the markets, but not necessarily the economy. I think that's holding true and coming to fruition. And this is all because the Federal Reserve since March of last year, essentially told the markets that they were going to continue to raise rates, and shrink the size of their balance sheet until something broke.
Well, guess what? Something has now broken as we've seen in the banking system. We saw the impact that those rising rates had on housing.
We've now seen the impact that it's had on regional banks, and we're going to soon see the impact that that's had on earnings and the economy. For the first quarter of 2023, as it stands now, according to FactSet, the earnings of the S&P 500 are expected to contract, go down by 6.6% on a year over year basis.

Walmart-backed payments giant PhonePe makes e-commerce push
In a move reminiscent of its successful early bet on the government-backed UPI network seven years ago, PhonePe, India's leading mobile payments app, is now setting its sights on the e-commerce sector. The Bengaluru-based startup, backed by retail giant Walmart, on Tuesday launched a hyperlocal commerce app, called Pincode, that is powered by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), an Indian government initiative striving to democratize the e-commerce landscape by offering a zero-commission platform. ONDC, a nonprofit firm that was set up by India’s commerce ministry in 2021, is an “interoperable” network, where buyers and sellers can do business regardless of the service they use, disrupting the consumers’ reliance on using proprietary services run by Amazon and Flipkart.

TD world's most shorted banking stock, shares down -ORTEX data
Hedge fund bets against Canada's TD Bank Group on Wednesday hit $4.2 billion, making it the most-shorted banking stock globally, according to data provider ORTEX's calculations, with some analysts concerned about the bank's exposure to U.S. regional lenders. Around 4.1% of TD's outstanding shares were out on loan to hedge funds, while the second-most shorted bank stock, JP Morgan, only had $2.3 billion worth of shorts, showed the data. Hedge funds profit when they borrow a stock from an institutional investor and sell it back when the price falls, pocketing the difference, a practice known as short-selling.

Rising consumer prices in Mexico eased to a 17-month low in March
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexico's annual inflation slowed in March by more than expected to 6.85%, the lowest rate in nearly 1-1/2 years, although core price pressures remained elevated, data from national statistics agency INEGI showed on Wednesday. Still, core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, slowed to 8.09% from 8.29% the previous month. "Core inflation was impacted by the high readings in services, driven by the seasonal increase in airfares and tourism packages, and food services," Goldman Sachs economist Alberto Ramos wrote in a research note.

Walmart sees sustained pressure from inflation; to slow hiring pace
(Reuters) -Walmart Inc on Wednesday said inflation would continue to pressure its business this year, and that it would slow hiring as it builds out automation technology. "We believe, over time, the number of associates will grow, but at a slower pace than in the past as we complement people growth with technology and automation," Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said at the company's investor meeting in Tampa, Florida. Walmart said inflation continues to impact its business as shoppers add more lower-margin groceries to their carts over higher-margin apparel and home goods.
