Apple reportedly halted M2 chip production in January and February likely due to low MacBook demand

Apple halted production of its M2 Series SoCs used in MacBooks from January to February “likely caused by the low demand for MacBooks,” TheElec reports Monday.

Apple's M2 chip

JY Han for TheElec:

While production of the chips resumed in March after the full halt, production volume has dropped by half compared to a year ago, sources said.

This is the first time that the iPhone maker has halted production of its chips __ which it calls Apple Silicon.

From January to February, Taiwan’s TSMC, Apple’s contract chip producer, didn’t send any of its finished 5-nanometer M2 wafers to packaging and testing companies to be cut and assembled as finished chips, sources said.

This can only happen if Cupertino requests it and is likely caused by the low demand for MacBooks, which use the chips, they added.

MacDailyNews Take: As CEO Cook said to close out the company’s Q123 conference call in February regarding the Macintosh:

We have low share, and we have a competitive advantage with Apple silicon. And so strategically, I think we’re well-positioned in the market, albeit I think it will be a little rough in the short term.

It pains me to say this but the M2 has fallen behind both AMD Ryzen 7950X and Intel Core i9 13900K. Threw in a Nividia GPU and the AMD/Intel combo crushes the M2 in terms of performance. Apple silicon up to this point has a lot of innovation but the reality is the design of Apple’s current silicon is optimized for mobile power usage and heat management thus it’s a great design for mobile use; laptop or iPad. But for many professional uses in terms of raw speed it’s a few years behind windows options and falling behind.

What apple needs to do is design professional workstation CPUs and adopt Nvidia GPUs. Loose the on chip GPUs and give us up to 96 cores at a high clock rate. Apples heat management designs would allow them to push the performance envelope. But a dedicated workstation chip would lower profit margins so the chance of Apple actual pros what they need is DOA.

Perfect summation of the nagging problem that keeps Apple lagging behind PRO computer workflow leaders.

Like Adobe, Apple has an ongoing hate relationship with Nvidia GPUs. The on chip GPUs, as you pointed out, does not cut it in the PRO computing world.

I have been advocating for two decades to design PRO Computers to EXCEED the PC front runners.

Pretty Industrial Design awards mean little, when they cannot match industry leading raw power…

Um, Apple M2 performance is insanely great for 99% of the world’s population that use computers.

You would never put an AMD Ryzen 7950X or Intel Core i9 13900K in a MacBook equivalent — Air or otherwise. Also you would never add to either of those two a stand alone Nvidia or AMD GPU in a MacBook equivalent. The base M2 is not meant to compete with those CPU/GPU combinations. It will never go head-to-head with those CPU/GPU combinations. Putting those chip combinations in something like a MacBook Air would mean minutes, not hours, of run time and be painfully hot to utilize.

Now… When Apple finally releases a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon (whatever variant that is) then, and only then, you can draw such direct comparisons.

I hate to tell it, but the AMD Ryzen 7950X and Intel Core i9 13900K are now ahead of the M2. The AMD/Intel combination destroys the M2 in terms of performance when a Nividia GPU is added. The design of Apple’s current silicon is designed for mobile power usage and heat management, making it a perfect design for mobile use, whether it be for a laptop or an iPad. Apple silicon up to this point has been very innovative. However, it is several years behind Windows choices for many professional usage in terms of raw speed and is lagging behind.

With the poor performance of M2, I’m not surprised they halted production. After watching tear down videos of M2 MBP and putting in sub par ssd. Compared to the 16in. MBP 2021 which I have. Apple must think people are stupid. Let’s put in crap parts put up the price AGAIN. Then call it lightning fast and over hype it.

I’m not able to speak on the technical side of chips, but have said for years Apple has given up on the pro side of computer development. Apple computers were once a mainstay of high end graphics and publishing. Once the iPhone hit, Apple all but stopped being mainly a computer company, even dropping it from their corporate name. Communication became the focus of the company. Now it appears to be drifting towards becoming an entertainment/service company.

Is this a good thing? In the words of George Harrison, “ All things must pass away.” Maybe the evolution of Apple away from a serious computer company is a good thing. But maybe not. I certainly don’t like it.

Besides great products, the one really exceptional thing that separates Apple from every other computer/phone company is their ecosystem. With the consistent cutting edge development Apple has had with other products been equally applied to the pro end computers, they could own the corporate and education markets as well as the consumer market. Maybe it would be a world without the crap of Google and Microsoft. What a wonderful world that would be!

You effers gonna eff. Eff that!

All the comments above are pure BS. My MacBook Air M2 is fast – and silent. Runs all day. Those AMD and Fscktel i9 pieces of shtt are hot and need noisy cooling. F that! Take your x64 shtt and shove it up your clacker.

I’m sure your MBAir with M2 is fast. Can’t wait to get one of my own to replace my old MBPro with the i5 in it. I’m waiting for the 15 inch Air we expect to see pretty soon.

But, why do you think there’s no Mac Pro with an M-series processor? The obvious answer is that PRO users would buy the Mac PRO and be disappointed in the performance. Sure, an i9 and fast graphic cards burn a lot of juice. Pros don’t care. And sure an i9 and fast graphic cards require a lot of cooling. Pros don’t care.

But, charge a Pro upwards of ten thousand dollars for a machine that is slower than the one he could have had for half that price? Now they care, and the tech press would be allll over it.

Another foul mouth that gets the computer name wrong, and has no clue or idea what they are talking about. You’re not a PRO admittedly buying a MacAir, Puhleeze!…

Never claimed I was a professional these days. Used to be, but I’m retired now. Mac owner since 1989. Apple Certified Technician for many years. Technical writer, publisher, illustrator for three decades. Professional sports photographer and videographer for over ten years. I’ve owned my share of pro-level Macs in the past, but I don’t need one now that I’m retired.

But I still have friends and family in the business, and some of them have switched to x86 hardware for the benefits of faster graphic performance. My own grandson is a video editor for a tv show you may have watched if you’re into sports. He carries a MBAir for his personal machine but uses x86 equipment for the job. He needs to cut and burn hundreds of 4K submissions each week. Ask him if he cares that his workstation gives off heat like a pizza oven.
