Meizu 20 and 20 Pro launch with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-driven OLED displays and up to 80W charging

Meizu has unveiled the vanilla and Pro variants of its new 20 series of Android smartphones today (March 30, 2023). The devices are now poised to take on others such as the Xiaomi 13 series and OnePlus 11 with Qualcomm's new top-end processor, at least 12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The 20 Pro also boasts fast wireless charging and triple rear 50MP shooters.

Meizu has marked its 20th anniversary as a mobile device brand with an appropriately-named new line of Android flagships. They can now be pre-ordered on the Chinese market in the form of Pro and non-Pro variants, both of which have OLED displays.

Oddly, the vanilla 20's 6.55-inch screen is the one with the higher refresh rate: 144Hz, compared to 120Hz in the Pro. Then again, the latter's 6.81-inch panel is the only one with a 2K resolution and LTPO technology. Both displays show a Flyme 10-based UI driven by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which supports Wi-Fi 7 across the new premium smartphone line.

Meizu has equipped the 20 with its 67W "mCharge" wired charging, which increases to 80W, augmented with wireless charging of a 50W speed not seen in many other smartphones, in the Pro. These charging specs act on batteries of 4,700mAh and 5,000mAh respectively.

The 20 series' high-end components are, of course, found in an iPhone-esque metallic housing just 7.8mm thick in the Pro model. However, their rear shooters look most like that of the Galaxy S23 or S23+, awash with 50MP cameras.

Then again, only the 20 Pro has 3 of them, for main, ultra-wide and zoom purposes, whereas the 20 makes do with 1 as a main camera, along with 16+5MP backup lenses, one of which shares its raised lens bump with a ring-flash.

Oddly, the 20 Pro does not get this treatment, leaving it looking more like an S23+ with 1 extra camera ring. Nevertheless, the series is clearly gunning for Samsung's new flagships as well as those from Xiaomi or OnePlus - however, whether Meizu can succeed this time remains to be seen.

Its new top-end offerings' pricing might help with that, especially at 2,999 yuan (~US$436) for a base model 20 - with 12GB rather than 8GB of RAM no less, or 3,999 yuan (~US$582) for a 20 Pro of the same configuration.

Alternatively, Meizu also makes electric toothbrushes available to buy on Amazon.
