More Americans file for jobless claims; layoffs remain low

U.S. applications for jobless benefits rose last week but remain at historically low levels despite efforts by the Federal Reserve to cool the economy and the job market in its fight against inflation. Jobless claims in the U.S. for the week ending March 25 rose by 7,000 to 198,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Applications for unemployment benefits are broadly seen reflective of the number of layoffs in the U.S.

US weekly jobless claims rise moderately; fourth-quarter GDP trimmed

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose moderately last week, showing no signs yet that tightening credit conditions were having a material impact on the labor market, which remains tight. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the week ended March 25, the Labor Department said on Thursday. "While alternative seasonal adjustment approaches may suggest less upbeat figures as of late, they do not suggest particularly weak results, although momentum may be softening," said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan.

Meta rolls out long-sought tools to separate ads from harmful content

Meta Platforms Inc said on Thursday it is now rolling out a long-promised system for advertisers to determine where their ads are shown, responding to their demands to distance their marketing from controversial posts on Facebook and Instagram. The system offers advertisers three risk levels they can select for their ad placements, with the most conservative option excluding placements above or below posts with sensitive content like weapons depictions, sexual innuendo and political debates. Meta also will provide a report via advertising measurement firm Zefr showing Facebook advertisers the precise content that appeared near their ads and how it was categorized.

Cash prices for thermal coal mined from northern Appalachia and the Illinois Basin—two places where a lot of exported coal originates—have fallen more than half since September, when Europe was stocking up for winter.
