Web3 wallet provider MetaMask recently issued a cautionary message on Twitter. According to a tweet, several “baseless speculations” have been floating around regarding a supposed MetaMask snapshot or airdrop scheduled for March 31. There is no such token on the horizon.

The wallet provider has unequivocally stated that these rumors are false and dangerous. Such rumors create opportunities for scammers and phishers to exploit unsuspecting users, resulting in financial losses and security breaches.

CryptoMode has discovered several Twitter accounts falsely claiming to be linked to MetaMask or a $MASK token airdrop, further fueling the already raging fire of misinformation and speculation.

In response to these rumors, MetaMask has urged its users to remain alert and watch out for fake sites and phishing attempts in the days to come. However, contrary to what some rumors may suggest, the company has also explicitly denied any plans for an imminent airdrop.

It is worth noting that the recent rumors could be linked to a “fireside chat” session with ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin at ETHDenver 2023 on March 14. During the chat, Lubin reiterated that his firm is “actively working to decentralize” MetaMask and confirmed that the team intends to launch a token.

Although MetaMask has categorically denied any immediate plans for an airdrop, some community members still hope such an event might occur later.

Despite the lack of an official announcement, there has been a significant surge in activity on MetaMask. DappRadar data reveals that the number of transactions on March 27 rose to 21,460 from a baseline of approximately 8,000. 

The momentum is reminiscent of a similar increase in activity observed in November 2021 following rumors of an impending airdrop from the Ethereum Name Service and Lubin’s mention of a MetaMask token.

In light of these developments, MetaMask users must exercise caution and remain vigilant against malicious actors who might attempt to exploit the situation.
