Google may be working on a new feature that will allow users to generate more detailed replies to text messages. The current Smart Reply feature in Google Messages offers brief replies to text messages. Which may not always be sufficient for longer messages. However, a recent APK teardown of the beta version of Google Messages has revealed a new feature that could change this.

Google Messages May Soon Have AI-Powered Replies for Longer Texts

The feature is found in the composition box of the messaging app and appears to use a sparkle icon similar to the one used by Bard, Google’s ChatGPT rival. This suggests that Google may be trying to integrate an AI feature specifically meant to generate replies. However, it’s important to note that just because a feature appears in the code, there’s no guarantee that Google will bring that feature to the public.

When the feature is in use, all that appears in the composition box is “(TODO!).” This suggests that the tool is still in early development. However, it’s likely that the feature will rely on Bard or the technology it’s based on to autofill the field with a complete message.

While the new feature is similar to Smart Reply, there are a few key differences. Firstly, the generated message is not sent automatically. But rather allows the user to read and change the text before it’s sending. Additionally, the tool seems to be designed to generate more in-depth responses. Given this information, it’s possible that Google may be preparing for this new tool to eventually replace Smart Reply.

Overall, this new feature could be a major improvement for Google Messages users. Allowing for more detailed responses to text messages without the need for manual typing. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the feature is still in development. And may not necessarily make it to the public version of the app.
