Iranians facing economic crisis find little New Year's cheer
Iran's bazaars are packed ahead of the Persian New Year next week, but there's little holiday cheer as customers survey the soaring prices of meat and holiday treats, wondering if they can afford either. Crippling Western sanctions, on top of decades of economic mismanagement, have plunged the country into a severe crisis. Iran's currency, the rial, recently dropped to a record low, essentially wiping out people's life savings and making even some basic goods unaffordable.

ECB policymakers agreed on big hike only after Credit Suisse rescue
European Central Bank policymakers only agreed on another major increase in interest rates on Thursday after Credit Suisse secured a lifeline from the Swiss central bank and financial markets stabilised, three sources told Reuters. The sources close to the Governing Council said a sudden rout in the shares of Credit Suisse and euro zone banks on Wednesday had thrown their well defined plan for another 50-basis-point increase into turmoil as investors feared a new financial crisis. Some called for leaving rates unchanged and to wait for financial markets to settle down, rather than raise borrowing costs for a sixth time and risk making matters worse, the sources added.

Lenovo must pay $138.7 million for InterDigital patents - London court
China's Lenovo Group Ltd must pay U.S. technology firm InterDigital Inc $138.7 million for a licence for its portfolio of telecommunications patents, London's High Court ruled on Thursday in the latest round of a long-running dispute. InterDigital brought the lawsuit against Lenovo in 2019 over the terms on which Lenovo should take a licence of its patents which are essential to 3G, 4G and 5G standards. The litigation, which has so far featured five separate trials, centres on the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms of a licence for InterDigital's patents.

Silicon Valley Bank: Here's a timeline of the bank's failure
What a surreal stretch for tech. Silicon Valley Bank's collapse, and its new life under the ownership of regulators, has certainly warranted its fair share of hot takes, real policy implications, and questions about the future of where startups keep their money. Instead of tossing you a half-baked take, as you can go to Twitter.com for those, I think the best way to understand the SVB story is to read it day by day. Shares of Silicon Valley Bank began tanking sharply Thursday in the wake of the company’s announcement that it is raising additional capital by selling stock, taking a charge to roll over an asset portfolio to higher-yielding assets and extending its term-borrowing capacity.

Average long-term US mortgage rates come back down to 6.6%
The average long-term U.S. mortgage inched back down this week after five straight weeks of increases, good news for homebuyers as the housing market's all-important spring buying season gets underway. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reported Thursday that the average on the benchmark 30-year rate slid back to 6.60% from 6.73% last week. The average long-term rate hit 7.08% in the fall — a two-decade high — as the Federal Reserve continued to raise its key lending rate in a bid to cool the economy and quash persistent, four-decade high inflation.

Billionaire David Rubenstein Loaded Up on These 2 Beaten-Down Stocks — Here’s Why They Could Bounce Back
Will Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse influence the policy makers to take a more forgiving stance regarding its interest rate hiking endeavors? Word on the Street is that it is a possibility, but David Rubenstein is not so sure – the billionaire investor thinks the Fed will find the middle ground in its continued efforts to rein in inflation. “I suspect 25 basis points is the split-the-baby decision that’s most likely,” Rubenstein said ahead of the Federal Reserve’s meeting next week. Charles Schwab CEO says he took advantage of the recent dip. Here are 3 other bank stocks insiders are buying now
‘Buy the dip’ has not become the ubiquitous phrase it is for no reason. With bank stocks recently falling in unison whether they are in danger of meeting the same fate as SVB and Signature bank or not, there are plenty of ‘buy the dip’ opportunities investors can take advantage of right now. And that’s what one CEO has been doing. Having watched shares of his firm Charles Schwab drop by more than 30% since the crisis began, CEO Walter Bettinger said on Tuesday that he purchased 50,000 shares for
