Singapore’s Sea Soars 22% After Reporting Surprise First Profit
(Bloomberg) -- Sea Ltd. soared after reporting its first-ever profit, a milestone in the Southeast Asian gaming and e-commerce giant’s effort to convince investors of its money-making potential.
Most Read from Bloomberg
The stock gained 22% in US trading and added $8 billion to its market value after the Singapore-based company said net income was $426.8 million in the fourth quarter, helped by drastic cost reductions. Analysts expected a loss of $434 million on average. Sea’s revenue growth slowed dramatically but sales still exceeded estimates, rising 7.1% to $3.5 billion.
Sea, the largest of Southeast Asia’s internet firms and briefly the world’s best-performing stock, is emerging from a painful 2022. The company, which grew at triple-digit percentage rates just two years ago, has all but stopped expanding after rising interest rates and elevated inflation left online shoppers and gamers with less to spend.
The company took brutal measures last year to convince investors of its profit-making ability, including cutting thousands of jobs, freezing salaries and slashing more than $700 million from its quarterly sales and marketing expenses. Sea made a stark shift from its previous stance in spending for global expansion, shuttering operations in India and some European and Latin American markets in a bid to trim costs and reach positive cash flows.
“While most investors and analysts had expected overall loss could be narrowed by a large margin, we view the significant turn to net profit and EBITDA profitable in 4Q22 as a big surprise,” wrote Alicia Yap, an analyst with Citigroup Inc., in a research note.
Sea’s net income performance was clouded by a series of gains from adjustments in accounting for debt and expenses. Fourth-quarter revenue from Shopee, Sea’s e-commerce unit, gained 32% to about $2.1 billion. Sales at gaming arm Garena slumped, while revenue from SeaMoney, the digital financial services business, almost doubled.

Factbox-Hold or hike? Latin American central banks' wield rates to battle rising prices
A stubborn surge of inflation has caused central banks worldwide to adapt monetary policy to protect people and businesses from price increases, with many raising interest rates in step with the U.S. Federal Reserve. * Brazil's central bank decided at a February meeting to keep its Selic benchmark interest rate at 13.75%. Consumer prices in Latin America's largest economy rose more than expected in mid-February, at 5.63%, ahead of the bank's target of 3.25% in 2023, plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.

The Bullish China Reopening Narrative Looks to Be in Serious Doubt
If one were to read any bullish note on any commodity this year, it all really boils down to a single bullet point: Chinese demand to return! This "hope" or rather wishful thinking is the only reason why most chased oil, copper, and a host of other base metals early this year as money rushed into Chinese markets that had lagged all of last year, once their economies reopened. As China pumped money into the system to stimulate the opening of their economy late in Q4 post ending their zero-Covid strategy, this caused a massive rush to buy anything China related.

After steep climb in rates, Latam central banks show no signs of reversal
Latin American central banks have dashed hopes that they will back off sky-high benchmark interest rates, amid stubbornly high inflation, expected further tightening by the U.S Federal Reserve, and political risks in some cases. Latin American central banks were often in the vanguard of the global battle to quash inflation, with rate hikes totaling over 1,000 basis points in some countries. The central bank of Brazil, the region's largest economy, held its Selic benchmark interest rate at 13.75% last month, but said it was considering holding the six-year-high rate for longer than markets expected due to fiscal risks under new President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Cathie Wood and Ken Griffin Have One Thing in Common: They Both Bet on These Stocks
In 2022, Cathie Wood and Ken Griffin’s paths couldn’t have diverged any more sharply. These 2 ‘Strong Buy’ Penny Stocks Are Poised for a Massive Rally, Say Analysts
For investors, the stock market is always a game of risk and reward, and no segment exemplifies that better than the penny stocks. Defined as stocks trading at a price of less than $5, the pennies bring an ultra-low cost of entry to the table, along with a powerful potential for strong gains. At these low initial prices, even a small incremental increase in share price will quickly translate into a high-percentage gain on the initial investment – and for penny stocks’ fans, gains of 200% or even

Build A Basket Of High-Yielding Yet Safe REITs
Income investors are always on the hunt for higher-dividend yields, but too often stocks with high-dividend yields can be yield traps that are at risk of being cut. But higher yields do not always make a stock risky. Sometimes yields rise because a sector is out of favor because of economic conditions. That’s been the case since May 2022 with real estate investment trusts (REITs), as inflation and interest rate hikes have decimated the share prices of many REITs from what they were in 2021. Here
