DAVE BRIGGS: Cleveland, Ohio, famous for a few things, most notably brown water in the Cuyahoga River, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and being home to LeBron James, sort of. Technically it's Akron, but it's close enough. But now Cleveland can claim to be number one, the best city in America for tipping, the only city, in fact, that averages over 20%.

Digital platform Toast compiled the data. And you can see the top of the list is Denver, Salt Lake, Phoenix, Richmond, Chicago, New Orleans, and just making the cut there is New York. For the most part, I'd say the commonality of all of this here is we're just tipping too much. We're tipping not in terms of a percentage. But too many people, everywhere we go, there's a cup. There's a little thing we've got to sign, even when I ask for black coffee.

It's out of control. But I do applaud Cleveland. Nice job at being the most generous city in America.

SEANA SMITH: I applaud Cleveland as well, although I want to point out, of the eight cities that we did have up there, the top tippers, there wasn't a huge discrepancy. New York was at the bottom of the list, still the average tip was 18.7%, which I would argue is good.

I mean, I try to tip 20%-- certainly when I'm dining in stores. I don't tip the 20-- or sorry in restaurants. I don't tip the 20% when I'm getting my coffee or doing something like that, where it's a very, very brief exchange. Maybe I should. This survey result's making me second guess some of my tipping etiquette, my tipping behavior over the last--

DAVE BRIGGS: Yeah, I actually thought most cities in that top 10 would be above 20% because that seems to be the baseline now. You don't see anyone really-- no server is happy with a 15% tip these days. In fact, I would say they're downright offended. There have been a lot of viral videos lately about delivery drivers and servers who go to social media for any tip that's below 20%.
