Every day, I notice numerous issues with everyday objects — gates, bottles, railings, books, you name it. As a UX Designer, I’ve taken it upon myself to tackle these problems head-on by starting a weekly mini blog series where I’ll take a closer look at these items and attempt to give them a much-needed makeover.

Beauty and brains, pleasure and usability — they should go hand in hand.

What is your first thought when you see this? It looks like something that might teleport you to Narnia. Let me give you some context. This is a door knob in one of our university’s bathroom. My first thought was that someone could easily peek inside even if they don’t want to. 🥶

How it works?

You have to push the little edge to right to lock it. I have attached a video for the reference.

So how can we improve this hilarious design? We obviously have a lot of designs for doors and door knobs out in the world, but I am going to try and redesign the same round structure knobs. My goal is to explore every possible option and see how we could redesign the door knob to make it better and interesting. 😬

Although my drawing skills may not be top-notch, this brainstorming session proved to be incredibly beneficial in getting my creative juices flowing and thinking outside the box. It’s easy to get caught up in making things visually appealing, but it’s essential not to forget one of the most critical aspects of any design — usability.

The best design is the simplest one that works.

Business Impact

  1. Improved User Experience: Improved door knob design = easier to use = better experience. This can be especially important in commercial settings such as restaurants, hotels, and other public spaces where a positive customer experience is essential for the success of the business.
  2. Increased Safety: Easy-to-use & secure bathroom door knobs = less accidents, like getting locked in/out. This can be especially important in places like hospitals or care homes where safety is a critical concern.
  3. Enhanced Aesthetics: Great design = better bathroom vibes. This can be important in upscale or luxury settings where the appearance of the bathroom is a key factor in creating a positive impression on customers.
  4. Brand Image: A slick door knob = attention to detail. This can have a positive impact on the brand image of the business, especially in industries where customers place a high value on design and aesthetics.

So go ahead and upgrade that knob — your customers’ hands will thank you, and so will their funny bones!
