Xiaomi unveiled a pair of prototype augmented reality glasses on Monday as it aims to expand its product line beyond smartphones.

Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass Explorer Edition is the brand's official name for the item, which has a silver finish rather than being all-black and resembles a large pair of Terminator sunglasses.

According to Xiaomi, the glasses are merely a concept and won't be available for purchase just yet. Its goal to penetrate the market, however, is highlighted by the announcement made at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the largest mobile industry trade exhibition in the world.

The Beijing-based company also claimed that users of the headset could perform actions via gestures. When wearing the glasses, users would raise their hands in front of them and then move their hands and fingers in a precise way to carry out a function.

The glasses weigh only 126g, which is impressive given their size and the cutting-edge components they include. Xiaomi claims that by utilizing lightweight components like carbon fiber, magnesium alloy, and a silicon-oxygen anode battery that is smaller than a standard lithium-ion battery, it was able to keep the weight low.

The glasses are fully wireless, as the name suggests. A Xiaomi product claims to have a latency of just 50ms when connecting to a smartphone through the company's "unique low-latency communication channel".

Technological behemoths like Google, Microsoft, and Apple are intrigued by augmented or mixed reality as a means of offering customers new experiences
