Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and later versions has changed many features than Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Main difference is they changed Gnome desktop environment from Unity. This change makes also changes in many default appication comes preinstalled in Ubuntu.

One of the change done is in taking screenshot. Taking screenshot is needed when you want to show someone how to do something on the computer.

In the Ubuntu 16.04 and earlier version, after screenshot taken a popup window ask to save screenshot or copy to clipboard. But in the Ubuntu 18.04 and later versions, after taking screenshot, no popup window shows and nothing happens.

How to take screenshot in Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 20.04?

You can take screenshot by two ways, first click Window click and search for screenshot application and open it.

After application open, select the option If you want to take screenshot of whole screen, window or select the area.

After you click Take a screenshot button, a screenshot picture will be saved to ~/Pictures folder. If you do not have a Pictures folder, the images will be saved in your home directory.

Second way is you can take screenshot by direct shortcut key. Bellow are the schortcut keys on how to take screenshot.

How to Screen recording?

You can also record of your screen. Here is how to record a screen? Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R shortcut key to start recording what is on your screen.

When you press shortcut keys, a red circle will display on the top right side of screen. If you want to stop recording, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R shortcut key again.

A video of screen recording will automatically save to ~/Videos folder. If you do not have a Videos folder, the video will be saved in your home directory.
