Google Pixel 4a may not receive Android 14 update

Google Pixel 4a

The Google Pixel 4a probably had one of the most problematic release schedules in the story of the mid-range series. The phone was scheduled for May 2020, but due to the constraints caused by it, the phone was postponed to August 2020. It was easy to bypass this phone since its launch happened a few months before the Pixel 5 launch. Still, it was solid enough to keep the mid-range Pixel generation alive. The phone is about to complete its third anniversary, and a Pixel 7a is already being prepared. As per a new report, the software support for the Pixel 4a is about to end and the phone can miss the upcoming Android 14 update.

Google Pixel 4a is out of the Developer Preview party

To those unaware, the Android 14 Developer Preview was unveiled earlier this week. For now, there are just small subtle updates in comparison to Android 13. However, the first build already hints at what Google has in tow for the future. The Android 14 Developer Preview is available only on Pixel smartphones, but the Google Pixel 4a was left out of the party! The phone will not get any developer preview. For that reason, speculation is rising on whether the phone is eligible for Android 14.

Android 14

The Google Pixel 4a launched in August 2020 running Android 10. It got the Android 11 update in the same year, and the subsequent Android 12, and Android 13 updates. Therefore, we can confirm it received at least three major updates. Android 14 would be the fourth, but apparently, it won’t come.

Of course, there is a lot of time ahead of the Android 14 rollout. There is still hope for the Google Pixel 4a! With Android 13, Google rolled out the first preview in February, and the stable update arrived in August. With Android 14, we may see the same treatment. That means the beta releases will appear towards April/May. They will continue until June or July, then a stable release will come sometime in August. Developers and courageous Pixel users will be sending feedback, collecting bug reports, and experimenting with the feature ahead of the stable launch. As a result, Google can iron out everything until the final release. During this time, the company can evaluate whether the Google Pixel 4a will get the update or not.

Seriously, Google NEEDS to update this phone

Worth noting that this wouldn’t be the first time that a Pixel or Nexus smartphone is left out of the beta-testing party. Google can pretty much skip the Google Pixel 4a during the testing phase, to update it once the stable release comes out. With so many brands committing to four major Android updates, we believe that Google needs to do the same, or perhaps offer more.
