Meeting College Student Basic Needs

College students are struggling greatly to meet student basic needs such as food, housing, and healthcare. While these uncertainties are standing between them and their academic goals, advocates are seeking ways for students to succeed in the face of such challenges.
The data is clear: More than half of all college students in the U.S. are often left wondering where they will live or where their next meal will come from. More specifically, in 2020 nearly 3 out of 5 college students experienced insecurity with basics like food, shelter, and living expenses.

The problem is even worse for students of color, who are at increased risk to lack access to physical and mental healthcare, childcare, transportation, and technology. The sad truth is when standard needs are not met, up to 25% of all students drop a class, and only 20% of those who miss a class for financial reasons will ever graduate.

Meanwhile, across the nation tuition from 2008-2019 has risen 35% on average. No wonder then that 43% of full-time students must work while attending classes. For students with low incomes, the choice is far too often to skip college completely.

In the midst of these disheartening statistics, people are working to make a difference, but positive change requires understanding of the full academic and nonacademic difficulties students face. Fortunately, when nonprofit organizations, business leaders, and state policymakers collaborate with those in higher education, the future looks bright for students.
