Apple says your used iPhone is now worth less

Apple dropped its trade-in values for many older iPhone models. The decrease is as much as $80 for some.

Even so, used iPhones retain for value for a long more time, and can be worth hundreds of dollars off the price of a new model. Or just trade them in for an Apple gift card.

See the trade-in value for your iPhone

iPhones are expensive but hold their value. A unit from multiple years ago can still be traded in for a welcome amount. That’s in contrast to Androids that typically plummet in value quickly.

But older devices don’t hold their value forever. And Apple this week lowered what it pays for used iOS handsets when they’re used as trade-ins.

It’s the newer, more expensive devices that saw the largest drops. While Apple was offering $650 for a used iPhone 13 Pro Max a few days ago, the amount has now decreased to $570. iPhone 13 Pro also saw its trade-in value lowered by $80, in this case to $550.

Not every older iPhone model experienced a lowering in value, though. And some reductions were slight: iPhone 11 Pro went down just $20 to $230, for example.

The exact amount Apple pay’s for trade-ins depends heavily on condition. If the device looks like one that’s been through a war, it’s not getting top dollar.
