As a product manager, having a diverse set of skills and knowledge is super important for success. And in my experience, I’ve had the chance to work with PMs from all kinds of backgrounds and with different areas of expertise. It’s like working with a team of Avengers, each one bringing their own special powers to the table. In this article I will be going through the different product managers that I worked with.

The Technical Expert

First up, we’ve got the Technical Expert. These PMs are like Iron Man, always ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. They know code inside and out and can explain it in a way that even non-techies can understand. They’re always up to date on the latest tech trends and can fix problems faster than you can say “debugging”. They’re the go-to person for all things technical and can help the team overcome any obstacles that arise.

  • Strong technical background and understanding of technology trends.
  • Able to navigate and understand technical terrain with ease.
  • Can speak “geek” and translate technical concepts for non-technical team members.
  • Able to solve technical problems and anticipate technical obstacles.
  • Go-to person for technical questions and challenges.

Business Expert

Next, we have the Business Expert. These product managers are like Captain America , they’re powerful and strategic thinkers, able to lead the team to the victory. They’re masters of the art of persuasion and can sell a product like Steve Rogers can sell manners. They understand the market and customers like Natasha Romanoff understands espionage, and can make a convincing business case for any product. They’re always thinking about the bottom line and can help the team to focus on the most important goals.

  • Strong strategic thinking and leadership skills.
  • Able to sell a product and make a convincing business case.
  • Understanding of market and customer needs.
  • Strong persuasion and negotiation skills.

Design Expert

The Design Expert. These PMs are like the Hulk, strong and steady with a great sense of design. They’re creative geniuses and can turn any product vision into a visually stunning reality. User-centered design is their middle name and they can conduct research and usability testing like a pro. They can make a product look great and be easy to use at the same time, just like the Hulk can be both destructive and protective.

  • Strong sense of design and user-centered approach.
  • Creative mindset and ability to turn product visions into visually stunning realities.
  • Able to conduct user research and usability testing.
  • Strong understanding of user experience principles and how to make a product easy to use and visually appealing.

Analytics Expert

The Analytics Expert. These PMs are like Black Panther, able to use data to inform product decisions. They have a background in data analytics and are able to make sense of large data sets and use that information to improve the product and increase user satisfaction.

  • Strong background in data analytics.
  • Able to use data to inform product decisions.
  • Able to track and analyze key metrics, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to optimize product performance.

Just like the Avengers, each product manager brings their own unique set of skills and abilities to the table. Together, they can accomplish great things and make sure the product is a success. But it’s important to note that while each product manager may have a specific area of expertise, it’s beneficial for any product manager to have a general understanding of all the different types of product managers, as well as their respective strengths and weaknesses. This way, a product manager can effectively communicate and collaborate with all members of the team, and make better decisions that will ultimately lead to a successful product. So, whether you’re a Technical Expert, a Business Expert, a Design Expert, or an Analytics Expert, don’t forget that having a general understanding of the other roles will make you a more effective product manager.
