(Bloomberg) -- Australia could be heading for a period of drought and intense bushfires toward the end of the year as the nation grapples with climate extremes that’s costing the economy billions of dollars.

Most Read from Bloomberg

Parts of Australia are already reeling from heavy rain and flooding that’s damaged crops, swept away roads and cost lives. The chaotic weather has been driven by an atmospheric phenomenon called La Nina, but climate researchers see hotter and drier conditions ahead.

“The most likely scenario for later this year is El Nino,” according to Scott Power, director of the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences at the University of Southern Queensland. The weather pattern typically brings warmer-than-average temperatures to Australia.

The world is experiencing its third straight year of La Nina, something that’s only happened twice since 1950. Australia is the driest inhabited continent and the impact of climate change can be particularly harsh. Flooding cost the economy around $3.5 billion in the 2021-22 fiscal year, which followed devastating bushfires in the summer of 2019-20.

Rain over the past three years has led to excessive plant growth that could pose a bushfire risk if conditions become more hot and dry, said Agus Santoso, a climate scientist at the University of New South Wales.

Another climatologist agrees. “All you need really is a hot day with some wind and something to start a fire, and off you go,” said Janette Lindesay, a professor at the Australian National University.

Prolonged wet weather also makes it harder for so-called fuel reduction burning, where authorities conduct controlled fires to cut back easily combustible dead and dried vegetation.

Fed's Williams says Fed needs more rate rises to cool inflation

Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said on Thursday the U.S. central bank has more rate hikes ahead and sees signs inflationary pressures might be starting to cool off from torrid levels. “With inflation still high and indications of continued supply-demand imbalances, it is clear that monetary policy still has more work to do to bring inflation down to our 2% goal on a sustained basis,” Williams said in the text of a speech to be delivered before the Fixed Income Analysts Society in New York. “Bringing inflation down is likely to require a period of below-trend growth and some softening of labor market conditions,” Williams warned.

Exclusive-ValueAct calls for Seven & i to spin off 7-Eleven retail chain

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Hedge fund ValueAct Capital urged Seven & i Holdings shareholders on Thursday to back a spin-off of the company's 7-Eleven convenience store chain, arguing the move would improve the conglomerate's valuation and corporate governance. The U.S.-based investment firm, which owns a 4.4% stake in the Japanese company and has been urging it to make changes for at least a year, called on shareholders to express their opinions on the matter to Seven & i's board. In a letter reviewed by Reuters, ValueAct argued that a tax-free spin-off of 7-Eleven could be completed through a listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in roughly a year.

T-Mobile says investigating data breach involving 37 million accounts

The company, which has more than 110 million subscribers, said it identified malicious activity on Jan. 5 and contained it within a day, adding that no sensitive data such as financial information was compromised. However, some basic customer data — such as name, billing address, email and phone number — was obtained, and it had begun notifying impacted customers, said T-Mobile. "Our investigation is still ongoing, but the malicious activity appears to be fully contained at this time, and there is currently no evidence that the bad actor was able to breach or compromise our systems or our network," the company said.

Judge: Corps must discuss spillway use with fisheries agency

A federal judge has ruled that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must consult with federal fisheries experts on the effects of opening a spillway that protects New Orleans from Mississippi River flooding, but threatens coastal Mississippi marine life and tourism. The Bonnet Carre spillway control structure is upriver from New Orleans. Opening the spillway diverts Mississippi River water along a 6-mile (9.7-kilometer) course of guide levees to Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne, after which it flows to the Mississippi Sound in the Gulf of Mexico.
