Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera CEO, believes that ChatGPT is extraordinary, early, and dangerous. Ex-English major and now ed tech executive said he was impressed with how buzzy chatbot could “recombine word patterns” to “create unique ideas.”

Maggioncalda stated, “The first time I tried ChatGPT, it felt astounding.” ChatGPT was a “gamechanger” for Maggioncalda. He now uses ChatGPT daily as a “writing partner.”

His passion for AI goes beyond his personal use. According to Coursera spokespersons, Maggioncalda intends to integrate ChatGPT into Coursera’s course catalog. This will likely happen this year. ChatGPT can be trained using Coursera data to speak like the “smartest professors in the world,” he stated.

Maggioncalda’s endorsement comes when companies are experimenting with AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to find ways to incorporate AI capabilities into products and services. Microsoft has already announced its plans to invest $10 billion in OpenAI and include ChatGPT on its platforms.

ChatGPT has been used by some people to create Mozart-inspired piano music, to write and illustrate a children’s book in 72 hours, and to respond to dating app matches.

Maggioncalda was impressed by ChatGPT but also admitted that the AI “isn’t perfect” and could generate false answers. Many AI experts and companies have criticized ChatGPT’s real-life application.

Maggioncalda believes that ChatGPT has flaws, but it is still a valuable tool for creating interactive learning experiences. He said, “You need to think critically about it, but it’s stunning.”
