Deep learning is capturing the attention of the business world. A recent article from eWeek examines the growing interest in deep learning just in the last few years. While only 28 percent of enterprises were deploying the technology, as noted in a 2018 study, a 2021 report found that the number had grown to 67 percent.

What is contributing to this uptick in deep learning adoption? Companies are now realizing the value that AI initiatives, which often include deep learning, can have on business outcomes. Deloitte reports that 94 percent of business leaders agree that AI is critical to their success over the next five years.

Deep Learning 101

Deep learning is a subdiscipline of machine learning (ML) that uses algorithms in a metaphorical adaptation of our understanding of human neurons. The metaphor used is artificial neural networks. Deep learning is an ML technique that trains computer models in ways that resemble what humans do naturally—learn by the examples we come across.

Because the term “neural networks” evokes our own thoughts about biological ways of learning, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding AI and deep learning. However, the reality of AI and its power for positive impacts on business, is far more interesting than the hype.

Facets of artificial intelligence. Check out this detailed diagram of many in-use neural networks: a Neural Network Zoo.

Key Deep Learning Use Cases

How does deep learning help enterprises? Deep learning can be vital in providing transformational business benefits:

Predictive Analytics

Deep learning can be applied in projects with many variables and large historical data sets to enhance predictive analytics outcomes. Predictive analytics uses historical and current data combined with techniques, such as advanced statistics, to model unknown future events. These predictive models can become more precise over time with deep learning.

Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing (NLP), natural language generation (NLG), and speech recognition have improved with deep learning, increasing accessibility and reducing friction when humans need to interact with machines and computers. Use cases are cross-industry and include chatbots, devices like Siri and Alexa, and augmentation aids for people with disabilities.Deep learning assists NLP engines by identifying and mimicking patterns in human speech, enabling these systems to improve over time.

Image Processing

Image processing is a popular deep learning use case. It supports biometrics and facial recognition, medical scan analysis, autonomous vehicles, and identifying faulty parts on an assembly line, among other examples.

Recommendation Engines

Deep learning has a role to play in retail and B2C use cases. According to AWS, one “early success of deep learning was the development of systems that track user activity to develop personalized recommendations. By comparing the aggregate activity of numerous users, deep learning systems can even identify totally new items that might interest a user.”

Fraud Detection

Fraud detection can be significantly improved if companies deploy deep learning to identify abnormal patterns in sales and financial data. In manufacturing, supply chain, finance, and healthcare applications, deep learning neural networks trained on appropriate large datasets of labeled images can automate the process of identifying and dispositioning anomalies, reallocating resources for dynamically changing situations, and automating claims fraud management.

Medical Research

Deep learning can accelerate drug development for various diseases. During the pandemic, scientists trained models on biochemical datasets and used the resulting algorithms to identify pharmaceuticals that could treat COVID.

Industrial Automation

The heavy machinery sector requires a large number of safety measures. Deep learning helps improve worker safety in such environments by detecting any person or object that comes within the unsafe radius of a heavy machine.
