A chat with AI about UI/UX design

What will be our professional future as a designer together with artificial intelligence? Should we fear that one day we will be replaced by a machine? I asked ChatGPT what he thinks!

In 2022, two groundbreaking technologies were introduced to our world: Midjourney, an AI program that generates images from prompts, and ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that answers all your questions.
Artificial intelligence is entering our personal and business lives in an exciting but somewhat frightening way, causing us to change our view of things. Some are reluctant and wary of this new technology, while others are fascinated by it and embrace it fully. I’m closer to the second group of people, those who see enormous potential in embracing artificial intelligence in our work and our lives in general.
Artificial intelligence will be able to pave the way for new skills and processes that we do not yet know and lead us towards an unprecedented revolution. This process is not said to be totally good and painless, but everything will depend on how we decide to develop it.

Now we come to the heart of this article. By now we all know ChatGPT, the project conceived by OpenAI, the startup founded by Sam Altman and Elon Musk in 2015, which is capable of responding to your every request by simulating a human conversation.
I thought of asking it some questions about the profession of UI/UX designer, starting from simple questions on training and skills, to then get to discuss more thorny issues regarding the relationship between AI and designers.

Let’s see what came of it!

The characteristics of a UX/UI designer

Let’s start with an easy question, namely: what are the characteristics that a UI/UX designer must have? ChatGPT responds adequately with a list of skills that a professional in the sector must possess. The answer is not too elaborate, but I would say satisfactory.

The studies to follow to become a UI/UX professional

To this question, ChatGPT gives some good advice on where to find online courses and resources for those who want to pursue this profession, as well as some university studies useful for this purpose.

Future job opportunities for designers…

Continuing, I asked what the future job opportunities could be for a designer. In the response, ChatGPT highlighted the new work areas in the field of VR/AR, IoT and voice user interfaces. Also, specify that there are requests for designers who have skills related to data analysis and user research.

Let’s move on to the AI questions

The first question about AI: which AI tools can help the designer in his work? The answer is a list of the best tools that all designers are familiar with, but perhaps only some know that these tools are powered by artificial intelligence. The answer is helpful, but it didn’t quite satisfy me, as I would have expected it to mention tools other than the traditional ones as well.

The impact of AI on the profession of UI/UX designers

I then moved on to a general question about the impact AI can have on a designer’s job. The answer is interesting with a list of activities where AI will be able to assist us, such as helping in user experience personalization or design prediction by analyzing past data and formulating probable future solutions.

The Burning Question: can AI build a user interface itself?

And now the question that touches us closely, namely whether one day an artificial intelligence will replace the work of a designer. While he says it might be possible, ChatGPT explains that AI is more likely to assist the designer in the UI-building process than replace them, at least for now. And at the end he also adds that we will still be useful in the design process for our unique human perspective and creativity.

Will it be necessary to use artificial intelligence tools in the future?

As I expected, the answer is simple: it is not necessary to use artificial intelligence tools to be competitive in the world of UI/UX design… but those who won’t use these tools in the future could find themselves in difficulty compared to those who use them. This is why it is important to always be up to date and start approaching these new technologies!

Can AI help me with a design project?

Finally a practical example. I asked if you could help me create the right UI/UX for a project.

After her affirmative response to my request and some advice on how to ask for help with the project, I provided a mock brief with a prospective client. ChatGPT’s answer is not bad and helps to focus on the salient points requested by the client. By providing more specifics, you will surely get a more detailed answer.

Conclusions

In conclusion, according to ChatGPT, we will have to be positive for the future of UI/UX design, as our job will not disappear, but we will certainly have to adapt to new technologies and work alongside them. Being updated will be an added value for future designers to work more efficiently and find new job opportunities.

ChatGPT provides helpful information phrased in a conversational way similar to the discussion you might have with a person, and that’s fascinating. Of course, there are limits, but that was to be expected given the limited amount of data he has at his disposal and not being connected to the internet. I can’t imagine what level it will reach in a few years with access to more data and the advancement of technology!

Aren’t you excited to discover our future together with AI? I hope so because it is already part of our lives and it is better to use it as much as possible to improve our existence.
