Sam Bankman-Fried reportedly avoided the typical sardine breakfast in Bahamas prison in favor of toast and jam
Sam Bankman-Fried's stint at a prison in the Bahamas reportedly included vegan meals.
The Fox Hill prison located in Nassau typically serves grits and sardines for breakfast, and rice and beef for lunch.
Bankman-Fried avoided those meals and was instead fed toast and jam and stewed vegetables.
Disgraced crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried is well known for being a vegan, and that translated into a different set of meals during his stint at a prison in the Bahamas earlier this month.
According to a report from the New York Times, prisoners at the Fox Hill prison — located in the Bahamas' capital city of Nassau — typically ate a meal of sardines and grits for breakfast and unseasoned beef with rice for lunch. It was common for meals to be served in moldy bowls, and dinner meals were often skipped.
But for Bankman-Fried, his diet during his stay at Fox Hill included toast and jam for breakfast, and stewed greens and vegetables for lunch and dinners.
"By Fox Hill standards, Mr. Bankman-Fried received royal treatment," The New York Times reported.
Fox Hill prison is commonly referred to as "Fox Hell" prison by locals on the island. The prison has a population of about 1,400 criminals, which is 40% more than its original planned capacity of about 1,000 prisoners. Violence is common, both at the hands of prisoners and guards, and the prison has limited running water that often comes out in a brownish color, according to the report.
Rather than be held with the broader prison population, Bankman-Fried was housed in Fox Hill's medical wing with as many as five prisoners in a dormitory-style room that was under constant supervision, according to the report.
While the prison conditions weren't as bad as they could have been for Bankman-Fried, they were bad enough for him to agree with US prosecutors to be extradited to the United States, the New York Times reported, citing a person briefed on the discussions.
Fox Hill prison warden Doan Cleare told the New York Times that while Bankman-Fried was "well cared for," he didn't receive preferential treatment.
