The Most Annoying UX Problem About ChatGPT — Layout Jank?

When you ask a question to ChatGPT, the response is generated and displayed as it is being typed, causing the screen to scroll up and the text to move as it is being displayed.

This can make it difficult to read the response as it is being generated.

Have you noticed that, or felt annoyed?

I don't want the text moving on my screen while I am trying to read it.

I normally try to close my eyes for a few seconds, while I wait for the ChatGPT to finish typing and scrolling my screen, but I don't believe I was supposed to.

It is still pretty annoying.

I prefer the answer to be displayed at once, or to the page to stop scrolling and give me control over it. Has ChatGPT allowed us to change it?

I mean, it is fine if the content is being generated while it is displayed on the screen, but what about the scrolling, was it really needed?

So, an option would be that even though the content is displayed gradually, it wouldn't keep scrolling by itself.

The nicest UX rule is: “giving the user control” Usability Heuristic 3: User Control & Freedom.

The content should stay static, and the user should be the one scrolling up or down.

Have you heard about “layout shifting” or “layout jank?

I was thinking about it, I know it is not the same, But let’s not lose sight of what it is.

Layout jank occurs when the content of a webpage moves or shifts as it loads, which can be disorienting and disruptive for users.

This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as images or other elements loading at different times or the page layout changing as it loads.

If I am correct, Google penalizes websites for layout jank.

Layout shifting can be a problem for user experience (UX) because it can make it difficult for them to read and interact with the page's content.

It can also make it hard for users to find their place on the page, especially if they are scrolling through long articles or other content.

But layout shifting is more about a loading problem.

While ChatGPT has decided to scroll the page to give a realistic experience to the user, humn🤔

Not the same.

What about scroll hijacking, could that be the problem?

Scroll hijacking is a technique used in web design in which the normal behavior of a website’s scrollbar is intentionally altered.

Instead of scrolling the page smoothly, the website’s scrollbar might jump or behave erratically, or the website’s content might move in unexpected ways as the user scrolls.

Some designers use scroll hijacking as a way to create a more immersive or interactive experience for users. However, it can also be frustrating or disorienting for users, especially if it is not done well.

Check out these websites as an example of scroll hijacking:

Additionally, scroll hijacking can make it difficult for users to accurately navigate a website, as it changes the normal behavior of the scrollbar.

But, yeah, it makes the design cooler sometimes.

ChatGPT doesn't change the scroll bar behavior, so we might not call it Scroll hijacking, but, maybe you learned something new. Did you try the websites?

Do try! They have a pretty cool design.

The thing with ChatGPT is that it takes a bit of control over the page scrolling while providing answers.

Well, one thing I know for sure, it affects the user experience, and it affects accessibility, I know because it affects mine.

I mean, the design proposal is great, I get it, it translates the fact that your answer is being generated in real time.

It is tech, it is modern, it is futuristic, and it is cool.

But I would be happy if I could choose whether I wanted my scrolling to behave that way. Because I would pick to not scroll, so I could also read in real-time.

Or, maybe I am the only person who feels frustrated about that.

Well, let me know your thoughts on the comments.
