Mac lost in shipment help

Hi everyone bit of an annoying situation here…

I recently bought an MacBook Air Mac M2 chip. It has now been officially lost in post. The retailer tried to contact the delivery company but they cannot track the parcel.

I have asked the retailer for the serial number to file a crime/police report but the retailer doesn’t have it???!

So if the retailer doesn’t have the serial then what happens?? Can’t Apple trace it somehow?

Like if someone took it and turned it on and assigned their AppleID to the Mac couldn’t Apple find the Mac???

Surely the retailer knows what they get from Apple and know which ones they sent out to people by serial??

The retailer is the one that should be filling the claim and contacting Apple. Demand your money back from the retailer ASAP and buy from someone else.

I hope you mean a MacBook Air... If the listing was for an Airbook there is no such device by Apple so maybe it was a scam. As Robert says if it was somehow lost in shipping that's on the seller to deal with. Only if it was stolen after delivery then it would be your problem

If the retailer doesn't care about the serial number, why should you?

Yes, if someone activates that MacBook Air, it's fully theirs now. Even if you or the retailer reported it stolen, it has no effect. Apple doesn't take stolen reports from third-party retailers. Can you imagine if they did? It would be a he said/she said situation. The moment the product gets delivered to the retailer's shipping dock, it's no longer Apple's concern.

This isn't a police or apple problem - it's the same as anything that doesn't get delivered from a retailer - they have the responsibility to get what you ordered to you or refund you for it. Give the retailer a set reasonable amount of time to either resend another or provide a refund. If they haven't resolved it by then (a reputable retailer will as missing parcels do happen) then you'd claim from your card company

Okay everyone so just had an update! Apparently Costco cannot find the serial number and cannot provide this through further research… they have said there is no way to trace the Mac, even if it is turned on and signed in on someone’s ID 😡

No surprise there. Costco definitely records the serial number, but it's not of any use in this case.

Costco has excellent customer service. I find it hard to believe they can't track the shipment to see that it did not end up at your address. I would call them again and escalate it until they replace the machine.

They don’t have your mac. They have Costcos mac.

It’s not worth your time or stress to resolve Costcos problem. Just get a refund or replacement.

Irrelevant, to you at least. Costco sold YOU a MacBook, until YOU have the MacBook it’s theirs to worry about. They will either ship you another one, or you’ll demand a refund - end of story.

Of course they do. But it’s useless because Apple isn’t in the business of tracking stolen merchandise from third party resellers. There is no benefit for Apple to do that.

Be less on an angry mission and be more on a focussed mission to get a replacement or refund via your retailer. What happened to the one you bought is zero concern of yours, so don't worry about it. That's your retailer's problem. You can prove you haven't received it. Presumably there is no dispute between you and your retailer about that. So just get the retailer to send you another one, or refund you.
This will almost certainly be another product that 'fell off the back of the lorry', as we say in England.

You still don't seem to understand.

Apple. Doesn't. Care.

Apple already received money from Costco. In fact, Apple would get more business if Costco to had buy another MacBook from Apple to sell.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Not sure why you're so concerned about a $2T tech company and $0.25T warehouse club and their financial statements.

You're also assuming here that someone is going to keep the package, even knowing that it isn't theirs. That isn't putting much faith in people to do the right thing. I mean, you never know if someone will do the right thing or not here. Assuming that they do, and you follow everyone's advice here and make Costco send you out a replacement Mac for the one that was lost, what happens when that person gets you back the lost Mac? Wouldn't that make you the thief for having two separate Macs, one of which was paid for?

But as others have said, there is nothing that Apple will do on this, because they didn't directly sell you the Mac. Costco did. And Costco is normally upon this and what to do, especially with not only wanting to keep the sale (that's a huge chunk going to them), but also in keeping your MEMBERSHIP as well. If they are telling you that there is nothing that can be done, you need to escalate that issue up higher in their customer service department, because that is something that they are responsible for. If they could not deliver a product they sold to you in good faith, then they are obligated to either send you a replacement unit, or refund your money. You need to take this up directly with Costco.

BL.
