Week 18: New Tools, Hypercard, Ads

Using Lightweight Software

I’m trying to use the Eee PC more often in my day-to-day life. The reason I got it in the first place was because of its size. It’s so much easier to sit on the couch with this thing or to take it with me to a cafe. But the tools that I used were slow, so I had to find alternatives:

Subvertising

I recently read a book called Advertising Shits in Your Head, and it’s so interesting to learn about the reasons why people remove or deface ads. I assumed that people were just doing it for fun, and it didn’t occur to me that it could be an act of resistance or protest.

Playing with Hypercard

I recently learned how to import images into Mini vMac. System 7 understands GIF filetypes so the steps that I took are:

  1. Run the ImportFI app in the emulator.
  2. Scale the image down, dither it, and convert it to black and white using ImageMagick: convert thing.jpg -resize 512 -dither FloydSteinberg -remap pattern:gray50 thing.gif
  3. Drag and drop the image into the emulator.
  4. Open the image using the GIF Converter app in the emulator. (I imagine other image viewers would work similarly?)
  5. Copy the image then paste it into Hypercard.

I’m thinking I could make some sort of e-zine with this, so we’ll see!
