Graphic designer trades up to Mac Studio and Studio Display [Setups]

Las Vegas-based graphic designer, video editor and photographer Allen Williams recently made the move from an older iMac to a brand new Mac Studio and Studio Display combo.
He shared his updated computer setup — and a bit about what a difference it makes in his work — with Cult of Mac this week.

Graphic designer replaces iMac with Mac Studio and Studio Display
“Traded in my iMac for this new shiny Apple computer. It’s amazing! Lots of SSD drives for editing from,” Williams told Cult of Mac. He runs a Mac Studio with an M1 Ultra chip and 128GB of unified memory.
The M1 Ultra is like two fused M1 Max chips. As such, it doubles many aspects of the chip, giving it a 20-core CPU with 16 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, a 48-core GPU, a 32-core Neural Engine and 800GB/s memory bandwidth, according to Apple.
Williams pairs the powerful desktop computer with a new Studio Display, Apple’s 27-inch 5K Retina monitor with 5120 x 2880 pixel resolution, 600 nits of brightness, a 12MP camera with Center Stage and a six-speaker sound system.
Given his much-improved computing power, he said he’s always ready to do remote video and photo editing for clients across the country. The software he relies on most includes Da Vinci Resolve, After Effects and Photoshop, although those are just a few of many apps he uses.
Williams said he also works on audio design for clients. He runs sound through a Focusrite Scarlett audio interface and uses 70-watt Yamaha SH5 powered studio monitors for amplified sound in the room.
