First, the Washington Post reports Elon might fire 75 percent of Twitter’s staff, and now Bloomberg cites anonymous sources saying that — like Elon himself — US government officials may be uncomfortable with the billionaire buying Twitter.

The report says the Biden admin is considering a CFIUS review of his deals to consider national security risks.

US officials have grown uncomfortable over Musk’s recent threat to stop supplying the Starlink satellite service to Ukraine — he said it had cost him $80 million so far — and what they see as his increasingly Russia-friendly stance following a series of tweets that outlined peace proposals favorable to President Vladimir Putin. They are also concerned by his plans to buy Twitter with a group of foreign investors.

You’d think that disappointing viewers with its 2017 movie adaptation would be enough, but no, as previously reported, Netflix is working on another live-action adaptation of Death Note.

This one is planned as a TV series made by the production company of Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, and now Deadline reports they’ve found a writer and EP, Halia Abdel-Meguid.

A longtime fan of the manga and anime series, Abdel-Meguid — who speaks fluent Japanese and has previously lived in Tokyo — is taking on Death Note having worked with the Duffers on another Upside Down Pictures development project for Netflix. She is a writing consultant on their series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman.

In recent years Instacart has pulled in a lot of talent from tech companies like Meta — including CEO Fidji Simo last year — as it was seemingly close to going public.

But tonight, the NYT reports that after cutting its internal valuation from $40 billion to $24 billion in March, it’s now shelving plans to go public in 2022. Maybe 2023 will be the year?

Snap just reported its earnings for the third quarter and the numbers are mostly in line with what Wall Street was expecting. Daily users reached 363 million, a 19 percent increase that is much better than growth rates for Facebook and Twitter. Revenue only grew 6 percent to $1.13 billion and Snap remains unprofitable.

Snap invented the Stories format but now it’s saying that users are engaging less with their friends’ Stories, which is a problem for its business since ads are placed between Stories. The company laid off 20 percent of its employees recently in an attempt to cut costs and get to profitability faster.

A Reddit user has managed to get macOS running on a Steam Deck. Using a combination of SteamOS VirtualBox virtualization software, macOS Catalina is up and running on the 7-inch display with performance said to be “normal.” But the animations are laggy according to the Reddit poster, and booting macOS takes minutes. That’s probably down to no hardware acceleration, but hey it’s fun to experiment!

The cash-strapped EV startup just announced it would be winding down its UK operations in favor refocusing its business in the US. The main reason is the Inflation Reduction Act’s tax credit rules requiring EVs to be made in the US. It’s unclear how far the company will go with only $330 million of cash on hand and its stock price in the gutter. Better get cracking!

It’s nearly time to see what AMD has been cooking up for its RDNA 3 GPUs. AMD will hold a livestream for its next-gen GPUs on November 3rd at 4PM ET. These GPUs will be designed for gamers and creators, but they’ll also need to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 4090 4K beast. AMD might need an answer to DLSS 3, too. Game on.
