中国天眼FAST发现宇宙中最大原子气体结构
中国天眼FAST是当今世界上口径最大、灵敏度最高的单口径射电望远镜。
近日，中国科学院国家天文台利用FAST进行成像观测，在致密星系群——“斯蒂芬五重星系”及周围天区，发现了1个尺度大约为两百万光年的巨大原子气体系统，也就是大量弥散的氢原子气体。这是迄今为止，在宇宙中探测到的最大的原子气体系统。该成果于北京时间2022年10月19日23点在国际学术期刊《自然》杂志发表。这项发现预示着，宇宙中可能存在更多这样大尺度的低密度原子气体结构，对研究星系及其气体在宇宙中的演化提出了挑战。
