Shein launches resale service as a commitment to ESG initiatives

Shein rolled out its resale platform, Shein Exchange, in the US on Monday, part of the fast-fashion retailer's effort to create a more circular future of fashion.

Created in partnership with resale technology company Treet, the service is only available in the US, with plans to expand elsewhere around the world next year.

The resale feature simplifies the transaction process, allowing customers in the US to buy and sell pre-owned items within the existing Shein mobile app.

“The goal of Shein Exchange is to make resale just as easy and convenient as buying something brand new, while also igniting a cultural movement of circularity within our own Shein community,” Adam Whinston, Global Head of ESG at Shein, said in a press release. 

“We’re calling on our community to mobilize and keep previously owned clothing in circulation for as long as possible. By harnessing the reach and the influence of our growing community, we believe that shopping resale can become the new normal in our industry,” added the executive.

Last year, the Chinese retailer overtook Amazon as the most downloaded shopping app in the U.S. thanks to its wide selection of trendy, ultra-cheap clothing. But it has also brought it under fire, as the business model is seen as eco-unfriendly and unsustainable.

To improve its public profile, the company in December hired ESG veteran Adam Whinston, who has 15 years of experience at Walt Disney, Hewlett-Packard and J.C. Penney.
