BMW shifts electric minis production from UK to China

October 15, 2022 1:30 pm

BMW will stop making electric Mini in the UK and switch production to China.

BMW is to axe all UK production of the award-winning electric Mini and switch it to China.

BMW makes 40,000 electric Minis annually at its Cowley factory on the suburb of Oxford and plans to end the production by next year end. It also said workers at Cowley will build the Mini Cooper three-door and five-door Hatch models. The Mini Convertible will be built at Plant Oxford from 2025.

Great Wall Motor Co. is the partner of BMW to make electric hatchbacks and a small sport utility vehicle in China, two parties signed an agreement in 2018.

In November 2021, BMW said it would manufacture electric Minis at a new plant in the eastern province of Jiangsu starting from 2023. The partnership between BMW and Great Wall Motor means their hatchback and small SUV models will now be made in east China.

There is also a possibility of making Great Wall’s vehicle at BMW’s Oxford factory, two parties had discussed the relevant topics, a spokesman for Great Wall told the Times.

Mini boss, Stefanie Wurst, also said that the Oxford factory could build both Minis and Great Wall brands such as Ora and Wey at some point in the future.
