Apple saw strong growth despite worldwide PC shipment decline in 2022 Q3

Global traditional personal computer shipments declined by 15% to 74.25 million units in the third quarter of 2022, according to an IDC report released on Oct. 9. Four of the top five brands by shipments saw a year-on-year fall in the third quarter of 2022. HP had the largest yearly decrease at 27.8% in the third quarter of 2022, shipping 12.7 million units. Chinese vendor Lenovo stood strong in first place with 16.88 million units shipped, taking 22.7% of the market. Asus, another major PC vendor, had the smallest yearly decline at 7.8% in this quarter, shipping 5.54 million units worldwide. Meanwhile, Apple saw 40.2% yearly growth, with 10.06 million units shipped, nearing the sales of Dell, the third largest vendor, at 11.96 million units. The growth raised Apple’s market share to 13.5%, up from 8.2% last year. IDC attributed the overall decline in PC sales to “cooling demand and uneven supply.” Jitesh Ubrani, a research manager for IDC, stated that Apple was “the only exception as their third quarter supply increased to make up for lost orders stemming from the lockdowns in China during the second quarter.” [IDC]
