2013年12月，为进一步方便旅客购票，中国铁路在原有互联网售票系统的基础上，推出了手机客户端应用程序铁路12306，上线以来，铁路12306 App从1.0版演进到5.5版，历经30多个大版本、500多个小版本的升级。
据中国铁路官方介绍，目前，铁路12306 App已经具备网络购票、在线选座、网上点餐等多种服务功能，
下载安装累计已达17亿多次。
12306网站（含手机App）最高日访问量高达2000亿次，高峰时每秒售票量超过1500张， 单日最高售票量1541.3万张，年度最高售票量达35.7亿张，占年度售票总量的81.1%。
目前， 12306客户服务系统已经成为全球访问量最大、交易量最大的在线票务系统。
