ALP prototype 'Les Droites' is to be expected later this week (openSUSE News)

[Posted September 28, 2022 by corbet]
The openSUSE News site is looking forward to the imminent preview release of the openSUSE Adaptable Linux Platform (ALP) distribution:
As far as “Les Droites” goes, users can look forward to a SLE Micro like HostOS with self-healing abilities contributing to our OS-as-a-Service/ZeroTouch story. The Big Idea is that the user focuses on the application rather than the underlying host, which manages, heals, and self-optimizes itself. Both Salt (pre-installed) and Ansible will be available to simplify further management.

Users can look forward to Full Disk Encryption (FDE) with TPM support by default on x86_64. Another part of the deliverables are numerous containerized system components including yast2, podman, k3s, cockpit, Display Manager (GDM), and KVM. All of which users can experiment with, which are simply referred to as Workloads.

As à French reader, the naming sourds odd.
It could mean "the lines" or "the straight lines", in other words a geometrical object. Or it could mean " the various components of the right side of the political landscape"

When I read Les Droites, the second meaning comes to my mind which is a very strange feeling when reading a release codename.

Add to this the Marketing heavy content of the press release, and you get what is IMO ont of the mort ridiculous release I have ever read.

> mort ridiculous

I have to congratulate you on that typo ;-)

FWIW, even as a non-French native, having not all that much French learning left in my head, I too did wonder what they meant. But they did point to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Droites for the name, though without a reason for picking it.

Presumably they are choosing peaks within the, er, ALPs. Apparently Les droites is the lowest peak of 4000 metres or more, so they may be crawling up that list.

Thank you for the link to the actual origin for the codename. As fot the typo, credit should be shared with my phone auto correction feature, trying to turn evenry english word into some french vaguely similar word.
