9月28日，有着“世界级挑战性工程”之称的汕头海湾隧道正式建成通车，免费通行。
作为汕头内海湾南北两岸的过海新通道，海湾隧道内全程驾车仅需6-8分钟
，而由汕头北岸到达南岸新城的耗时也从此前的40分钟缩短为10分钟以内，汕头市民“跨海”时间大大缩短。
据了解， 汕头海湾隧道总长度6.68公里，设计时速60公里，设计为分离式双向六车道。
汕头海湾隧道创造了多个首次。它是中国最大直径越海盾构隧道，是中国首条兼具城市道路与一级公路功能的水下盾构隧道，同时也是中国第一条地处8度抗震设防烈度区的超大直径海底盾构隧道。
