Analyst assesses CrowdStrike’s opportunity to consolidate tools and enrich security beyond the endpoint

As the Fal.Con gathering came to a close in Las Vegas this week, the event offered a glimpse into how companies such as CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. are seeking to address pain points in the cybersecurity industry.

One of these has been tool fatigue. A ReliaQuest survey of cybersecurity professionals found that enterprises maintain an average of 19 different security tools, and 71% of security decision makers believe that time spent on tool management inhibits defense against cyber threats.

“CrowdStrike has an excellent opportunity to consolidate tools; it’s one of the biggest problems in the security business,” said Dave Vellante, industry analyst for theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. “With its 22 modules, CrowdStrike can give you ROI and consolidate those. Not only is it risk reduction, it’s lowering the labor cost and labor intensity. There’s a really strong business value and value proposition.”

Vellante spoke during the closing analysis segment at theCUBE @ Fal.Con 2022 , an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. He discussed CrowdStrike’s interest in extending security beyond the endpoint and its mission to build a robust ecosystem. (* Disclosure below.)

Building a complete offering

CrowdStrike added extended detection and response capabilities to what is now called Falcon Insight XDR. The move broadened endpoint security by enriching telemetry data for rapidly identifying threats while continuing to grow a network of agents or sensors to monitor activity.

“The lightweight agent allows them to add new modules and collect more data to scale out the purpose-built threat graph and time series database that they’ve built,” Vellante said. “CrowdStrike is very focused on making a more complete, holistic offering beyond endpoint.”

In addition to focusing on industry pain points, CrowdStrike demonstrated a strong interest in expanding its ecosystem. The company announced the acquisition of Reposify Inc., an external attack surface management vendor, and unveiled a new partner program during the event.

“We see that ecosystem evolving into IoT, into operations technology and critical infrastructure,” Vellante said. “The opportunity is there to build out a super platform-as-a-service layer so that developers can add value. If that happens, this ecosystem will explode.”
