Visit virtual AI-powered fitting room in Walmart iPhone app

The Walmart iPhone app now has Be Your Own Model, an AI-powered virtual fitting room with thousands of outfits.

Walmart added Be Your Own Model to its iPhone application. The goal is to bring the in-store fitting room experience to online shoppers.

Customers scan in a photo, AI will analyze it, then the software can show what the user would look like wearing more than 270,000 items.

Online clothing shopping is challenging because knowing how an item will fit without trying it on is difficult. Many customers resort to buying the same garment in multiple sizes hoping one of them will fit, and planning to return the rest. Walmart’s answer is Be Your Own Model.

Customers scan in a picture of themselves. This is used to create a virtual model. “We start by using algorithms and intricate machine learning models – techniques originally utilized in developing highly accurate topographic maps – to create a ‘topographic map’ of a customer,” says the retail giant.

Neural networks then determines how clothing items chosen by the customer look on the virtual model. That includes how the item fits based on the size, and how the fabric drapes. Images of the garment are used to create more a realistic look.

Select items from national brands like Champion, Levi’s and Hanes are part of Be Your Own Model. And so are many items from the retailer’s collection of exclusive brands. Look for the “Try It On” button on item pages in the Walmart application.

Be Your Own Model is currently rolling out to the iPhone version of the Walmart app. Shortly, iOS users will also be able to transfer their image from the Walmart app to use the virtual fitting room feature on the web.
