Square Enix announced during this week’s Nintendo Direct plans to launch a sequel to Octopath Traveler, its critically-acclaimed JRPG. The next instalment in the series is set for release on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on February 24, 2023.

In Octopath Traveler II, players will embark on a journey through the brand-new world of Solistia. Just like the original game, the upcoming installment is being developed by the same team. However, Square Enix claims Octopath Traveler II improves upon the series’ iconic HD-2D visuals, which blends 2D characters in a gorgeous 3D world.

Apparently, the next game is not related in any way with the first title, which makes it the perfect entry for newcomers to the series. The new storyline, characters and features should appeal to both veterans and players who haven’t yet get a taste of the JRPG genre.

This time around, there will be eight distinct protagonists, each with their own story to unravel. Octopath Traveler II retains the first game’s twist on the turn-based formula. Players must act strategically to exploit enemy weaknesses to “Break” them in order to inflict more damage, and “Boost” their party member to enhance their abilities.

Also, just like in Octopath Traveler, the sequel will allow players to interact with NPCs throughout the world in various way by using actions unique to each character. So called “path actions” will vary depending on the protagonist and whether it is day or night.

The game’s announcement also contains the name and classes of the main protagonists: Hikari (Warrior), Agnea (Dancer), Partitio (Merchant), Osvald (Scholar), Throné (Thief), Temenos (Cleric), Ochette (Hunter), and Castti (Apothecary).

Thankfully, Octopath Traveler II implements a new battle element in which characters unleash a powerful ability once the ability’s gauge fills up during combat.

Octopath Traveler II is already available to pre-order for PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. A physical Collector’s Edition Set is also available to pre-order for console only (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5).
