The issue has finally been fixed with a KIR

New fixes now live for Windows 11 users

If you installed the most recent Windows 11 cumulative updates, and more precisely, KB5016691 (the optional update that was published in late August), there’s a chance you noticed a glitch affecting new Microsoft Accounts added to the operating system.

More specifically, this cumulative update comes with a glitch that breaks down the way users sign in to their computers after adding a new Microsoft Account in Windows.

The Redmond-based software giant says this only happens for a brief time and only for the first sign in, after which everything is working properly.

“After installing KB5016691 and adding a new Microsoft account user in Windows, you might be unable to sign in for a brief time after the first restart or sign out. The issue only affects the newly added Microsoft account user and only for the first sign in. This issue only affects devices after adding a Microsoft account. It does not affect Active Directory domain users accounts or Azure Active Directory accounts,” the software company explains.

Fix already available

Microsoft says a fix has already been released, and affected Windows 11 devices should get it automatically, with no input required on the user side.

More specifically, users just need to wait for the lock screen to show up again, after which they should be able to sign in properly.

“This issue is resolved using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). Please note that it might take up to 24 hours for the resolution to propagate automatically to consumer devices and non-managed business devices. Restarting your Windows device might help the resolution apply to your device faster. For enterprise-managed devices that have installed an affected update and encountered this issue can resolve it by installing and configuring a special Group Policy,” Microsoft says. The glitch only affected Windows 11, so no such issues should be encountered on Windows 10.
