CUPERTINO, Calif.—Today at its annual September iPhone event, Apple revealed an overhaul of its Apple Watch lineup, including three watches for three types of users.

First up is the Apple Watch Series 8, the direct successor to Apple's previous flagship wearable. Notably new is a temperature sensor designed to improve women's health tracking. Sensors on both the underside of the watch and just underneath the display can track changes as small as 0.1° Celsius, Apple claims. Users can be notified of cycle deviations and other aberrations tracked by temperature, heart rate, and cycle logging.

Apple, likely sensing the current US climate, noted that all of that data is end-to-end encrypted.

Two new accelerometers and gyroscopes in the Series 8 can detect the force of a car crash—front, side, rear, and rollover—and automatically contact emergency services and trusted contacts with your location. The detection works in passenger cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks, and is based on machine learning trained on over 1 million hours of driving and crash data. Apple says the data from crash detection is kept entirely on your watch. 

A new Low Power Mode could provide up to 36 hours of battery life for many current watch owners, turning off features like always-on display but keeping emergency services and core functions working. The mode will be available in Watch OS 9 on Series 4 and later watches.

Cellular models gain the ability to roam internationally with the Series 8. Bands by Nike and Hermès are updated for this series,

Series 8 Watches are available in aluminum cases in Midnight, Starlight, silver, and (Product)Red, and in stainless steel in silver, gold, and graphite. They start at $399 in standard Wi-Fi and $499 for cellular and Wi-Fi. Ordering starts today, with availability starting September 16.

Apple Watch SE, the entry-level watch, is based on the same Apple S8 chip as the Series 8, increasing speed and responsiveness over the current SE model by 30 percent, Apple claims. That means it also has crash detection sensors. It will be available in aluminum cases in silver, Midnight, and Starlight. The back case is made from nylon composite materials that better match the three case finishes, Apple said. The SE is available for $249 in Wi-Fi with GPS, $299 for cellular service, and is also available for order today, arriving September 16.
