Tech giant Apple is on the verge of revealing its latest iPhone, hosting its first in-person iPhone launch event in California since the pandemic where it will show off its new products.

Rumours are swirling around what the new device will look like and what features it will include. The notoriously secretive Apple has not confirmed anything about its new devices.

At Apple's "Far Out" event this week we are expecting to see four new iPhones and upgrades to the Apple Watch, including potentially a "Pro" version of the smartwatch.

Here is everything we know so far about Apple's latest products:

When will the new iPhone be released?

Apple is due to host its annual iPhone launch event on Wednesday at 6pm. You can read more about how to watch it here.

The iPhone is typically made available for pre-orders on Friday and then goes on sale the week after. This means the new iPhone should be hitting shelves on Friday September 16.

What will the new iPhone be called?

All bets so far are on iPhone 14, following on from the iPhone 13 that was released last year. Apple is said to be planning four new devices, although there will be a slight change in the roster of handsets on sale.

Apple is rumoured to be launching an iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, as well as the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max. There will not be an iPhone "mini" launched at this year's event.

The tech giant is also expected to unleash a series of upgrades to its Apple Watch category. This is expected to include a more rugged and durable Apple Watch Pro, which will be targeted at active users of the smartwatch.

What features and specs will the iPhone 14 have?

The iPhone 14 is expected to bring in a series of design changes, partly phasing out the divisive "notch" that has been a feature of iPhone models since 2017. Here are the features and specs we expect:

  • iPhone 14 design: On the iPhone 14 Pro models at least, Apple is expected to do away with its "notch" look at adopt what is known as a "punch-hole" front camera, giving the phone more screen space.
  • iPhone 14 size: The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro will have a 6.1-inch screen, while the "Max" or "Plus" models will have a 6.7-inch design. There will be no 5.4-inch "mini" design with this release.
  • Camera specs: The Pro models are expected to be due a substantial camera update. They will come with three cameras with 48-megapixels and feature the ability to record 8K video.
  • Improved processors: Apple will rework its internal chipset as usual, introducing an improved A16 chip on its phones. It will also improve its modem, which controls the phone's connectivity, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 chip.
  • Memory and storage: The new iPhones are expected to come with up to 6GB of RAM, according to analysts TF Securities, and up to 1TB of storage.

iPhone 14 satellite connectivity rumours

One persistent rumour is that Apple will launch a service for its iPhone range that aims to eliminate global "not-spots" by allowing its smartphones to connect to mobile data via satellite. This would allow them to send messages even when not in range of terrestrial cell towers.

It is thought such a service would, initially, be limited to sending an SOS text message. Satellite signals would be very faint to an iPhone and so it would only be able to send a small data package. Another possibility is that the Apple Watch adds a similar emergency calling feature. Such features are already featured on rival smart watches, such as those from Garmin.

According to Tim Farrar of TMF Associates, Apple could launch satellite connectivity for the iPhone with satellite company GlobalStar providing the network.

Apple Watch Pro rumours

The California tech giant is expected to reveal a series of updates to its Apple Watch at its Wednesday launch event. The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to have a slightly tweaked design with a flatter, larger display than before.

Perhaps the biggest change will be a more powerful "Pro" version of the watch, targeting athletes and fans of the watches built by companies such as Garmin. The new version will be more durable than previous watches, aimed at "extreme sports" fans.

The watch will have a bigger screen and a more hardy case. It could also include satellite connectivity for emergency messaging.

AirPods Pro 2

There is also an expectation that Apple will replace its ageing AirPods Pro with an updated version. There aren't many details about what these new AirPods will look like, but they can be expected to have better battery life, audio quality and fitness tracking.

iPhone 14 UK price

There are claims that the new iPhone will be slightly cheaper than the iPhone 13. Analysts at Trendforce expect it to be about $50 less than last year, meaning the iPhone 14 will start at $749 and the iPhone 14 Max at $849.

If the UK price follows past patterns we could expect the device either at £749 or slightly below.
