What is Labor Day - and why do we celebrate it?

Welcome to anyone joining us now in the early hours of Labor Day. As we wait for today's sales to start, and for new offers to go live, it's worth taking a look back at the origins of the Labor Day holiday.

Labor Day is a one-day federal holiday that's celebrated on the first Monday in September, and honors the social and economic achievements of American workers. It's been observed for 140 years, after the state of Oregon passed the first law to recongize Labor Day back in the late nineteenth century. 

According to the US Department of Labor, in its History of Labor Day article: "The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being."

A Labor Day sales classic - cheap grills

Labor Day is the unofficial 'end of summer' for many. Subsequently, you'll find a lot of retailers - particularly those who specialize in home goods and clothing - looking to sell off soon-to-be old stock. Grills are just one of these products and you'll often find quite a few decent choices at the big home stores. Unfortunately, as a fairly in-demand item, the savings don't tend to be huge, but they are still worth taking advantage of in our opinion, not least because a quality grill will last you a good few years down the line.

Home Depot outdoor cooking: save up to $200 on grillsA Labor Day classic - no roundup would be complete without some great deals on outdoor grills and barbeques. Home Depot in particular has already posted all its markdowns so it's a great opportunity to pick one up early. And we'd recommend you consider it as a couple of the pricier grills have already sold out. There are still plenty of cheaper options, though, such as this Nexgrill 4-burner for $199 (was $249) and this Char-Griller 3-burner for $199 (was $249).

Save cash - and your sleep schedule

A few years ago, everyone took their mattress for granted - after all, it's just a mattress right? In the past few years that's completely changed, however, with a number of innovative brands offering incredibly advanced (and comfortable) mattresses that have revolutionized our quality of sleep. Labor Day appliance deals - with a touch of style

Much like Memorial Day, Labor Day is one of those seasonal events that's synonymous with appliance sales at Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowes, and a few other big retailers. Samsung is just another one of those retailers but it offers a few extra perks here and there that make it an interesting choice - not least because you can literally design your own refrigerator on its website (and get a discount to boot).

It's no secret that everyone's feeling the crunch right now. That's why my third highlight today is for something that's super useful for a vast segment of consumers at this time of the year - school and college essentials. 

Amazon back to school: up to $170 off tablets and laptopsAmazon's ongoing back-to-school and off-to-school deals cross over with this year's Labor Day sales so it's a fantastic time to save some cash on essentials. Updated, daily, we'd particularly recommend checking out its range of savings on own-brand Amazon Fire tablets (up to 22% off), and its range of cheap gaming laptops, which are perfect if you want to both game and do college work.

You're absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to Labor Day TV sales this year. Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart are all offering exceptional cheaper options that are great for covering the basics. Our next choice, however, is particularly good if you're looking for a quality display. 

Samsung Labor Day sale: save up to $1,620Samsung is the top choice if you're looking for a big price cut on one of the best TVs on the market right now. Some of our favorite displays are receiving discounts of up to $1,620 right now and there are plenty of mid-range choices as well. This Q70A series display for $799 (was $1,099) is a good example of a display that balances premium specs and quality with a price that doesn't completely break the bank.

Our favorite Labor Day laptop sale so far...

OK, so I'm starting our recommendations with arguably the most important tech category in any big retail event - laptops. It's one category where you can save some serious cash if you're shopping around a big retail event such as Labor Day. It's also a category that's close to our hearts because always reviewing and testing new products for our best laptops every single month of the year.

Dell Labor Day sale: save up to $700 at Dell
It's a very close call between HP, Best Buy, Walmart, and other leading retailers but Dell gets our top pick for this year's best Labor Day laptop sale. A couple of recommendations in particular would include this excellent Inspiron 15 for $379, which is the perfect cheap back-to-school laptop, and the stunning Dell XPS 13 for just $849. This latter deal is on one of the cheapest deals we've seen so far on the latest model - and it's fantastic value with its combination of a 12th gen I5 processor and 512GB SSD.
